Do you bake it or fake it?

When the school asks for cupcake/cookie donations for a bake sale, do you spend time baking and frosting gorgeous yummy cakes, or do you zoom through the grocery store and buy any old make-do? Do you pass them off as your own? Do you care? Do you think I should care? Do you think the kids care?

I baked the last lot from scratch but would've worked cheaper if I faked so next time will fake ;)

I always try to make my own but sometimes life gets in the way ;) Don't think the children care...its probably more of a Mom rivalry thing....would never pass shop-bought goods off as my own though :)

I actually bake and fancy ice my own, they look and taste nicer, to me. I saw a lot of 'store bought' cakes being brought into school, and I just wondered if anyone really appreciated my hard work, or am I wasting my time? I like to teach the kids to make the effort, and hope that they will do the same when they are older. You are right about the kids always going for frosted cakes first. To take plain cupcakes is just mean IMHO!

I helped out at our school's bake sale and you'd be supprised at the number of parents who sent in shop bought muffins and cup cakes. There were so many nice baked goods for the children to choose from and the ones that looked good and had lovely icing and decorations were the ones to go first. So a few of the mums were in the kitchen icing and decorating the plain shop bought cup cakes. You could always buy the cakes then decorate them yourself.

I've faked it on many an occasion! kids have never noticed as I take it out of the packaging ;) mums in know probably noticed no doubt! There's a scene in "Calendar Girls" where there's a baking competition and the fake cake from M&S wins lol

My Maid owned a Bakery in Manila many years ago so she does all the baking in my house!

PS. No, i dont' think you should care. If baking's not your "thing" then there's no harm in buying things. No doubt your talents lie elsewhere :)

I absolutely adore baking and will put in a lot of effort for kids parties or desserts at a dinner party or if I have to take something where I know it will be appreciated. For school things I always, always, just about every time make Chocolate Crackles. They're easy, I don't turn the oven on, they look good in fun patty cases, I haven't bought them and the kids LOVE them! So all in all I think it's probably easy to say I don't bake or fake, just somewhere in the middle for that sort of occasion!

what a question, vp! Bake it, from scratch ONLY! No mixes either. Probably no one cares, but I know and my kids know, even if they don't know the difference yet. Don't give in to commercialization trying to rob us all of the ability to use our own ovens!
