My maid says 30kg plus 12kg hand luggage. Ticket says 30kg. I have a problem because we have no scale (by choice!) so what to do? She has one suitcase 70x40x50cm chokablock with clothes I think and one hand luggage suitcase. So do they add the hand luggage into the 30kg allowance or is it separate? Short of buying a scale how do I figure this out, everyone around here has left on holiday. If it is 30 + 12, can she split it however she wants eg leave the small bag behind if the big case is say 40kg? I will have 3 kids with me at the airport so just want to drop her and go and not hang about for luggage dilemmas :)

Thanks Sarahlou, as it turns out I just got a normal bathroom scale - her main suitcase was 31kg :D and the handluggage 13kg yikes So she'll have some repacking to do if she is only allowed 7kg.

If you are Silver skywards you can have 43kg however hand luggage is 7kg in economy, 12kg in business and first class It all depends if the flight is full and what mood the check in staff are if you are over... Doesnt make sense as can go mad in duty free which can weigh alot...

Isn't hand luggage only 7? That's what I thought. Although sometimes they'll give you a little bit extra. Not at Melbourne airport-grrrrr-they can be very strict

You can buy brass weighing scales at most corner supermarkets-certainly the ones in Bur Dubai-and they are surprisingly accurate for such a cheap gizmo. Perhaps ACE has them too. Aaah that's where I saw them! Thanks and will look in Geant if no luck in ACE Ju.

You can buy a baggage scale. I bought mine from Geant (Ibn Battuta) for 60AED.

Thanks ladies, Dunight well I'm no gymbabe, but I can just about pick it up with one hand (!) Maybe it is less as you say that's heavy for one bag - but it's hard to tell. Suznz, thanks for the info and Edna - where can we get a luggage scale? Anywhere that's not teeming with people right now? Finding the malls unbearably busy at the moment. edited by Aryanwynn on 12/07/2011

You can have up to 30kgs check-in luggage and the max hand luggage is only 8kgs. They have just started weighing hand luggage (before you go through immigration) to any bags that are on the big side or look heavy. But they are ok in DXB airport if you are a bit over! Definitely not in Auckland Airport however!! Also tell her to take a larger handbag as they don't worry about handbags! edited by suznz on 12/07/2011

Go and buy a proper luggage scale, they aren't expensive, and they're certainly much cheaper than having to pay excess luggage charges. Ours has saved us a fortune on several occasions! The 30kg is for hold baggage, the hand luggage is separate. Any excuse to hit you for excess charges, they will take it.

The baggage she can check in should be 30kg or less, if she wants to check in more she will need to pay excess baggage charges. Unfortunately she won't be able to split the allowances and check in more then carry on less. The carry on baggage is rarely weighed, but one cabin size suitcase (or 12kg as they put it) is in addition to the 30kg checked in luggage. Re weighing... 40kg is a heck of a lot for one bag!! Most airlines offer a limit of 20kg for economy... but the maximum they will take in any one single bag is 32kg (and they will label it HEAVY) Are you able to pick up the bag with one arm? That's usually a pretty good indication of whether it's too heavy (depending on how strong you are :))
