Has anyone had their daughter acquiring the babyish style to speak from a friend, or is it only mine? I'm on my nerves end!

DD is 6 and spend a lot of after school time with her best friend who is also our neighbour (same age, but they go to different schools). I'm trying to avoid play dates but what else? I try to explaining to her how silly she sounds and how much she isn't like that, but is not helping. The girl is from a good family and parents are really nice people, but she is extremely spoiled and difficult personality. They love each other and I appreciate their friendship but I cannot stand to see my daughter changing for worse!

I followed a tip from MIL and is working. well, since yesterday. We video taped her talking the "silly" and the normal ways. Showed it on tv without making a big fuss of it. She didn't say a thing at the time, but has gone to normal mode since. Hope it lasts! edited by 2girls2cats on 15/10/2011

I feel your pain, my 3 year old does this sometimes and it drives me nuts! So now, I just ask her if she is a baby or a big girl. When she says 'big girl' I ask her why she is talking like a baby then because only babies speak in such a voice. The once she tried it on and said she was a baby, I explained to her that babies had to go to bed and not play after tea and that babies weren't allowed fish fingers, peas or chocolate buttons... worked like a charm! ;) but yours is 3, mine is 6!!! argh!!!

you could just tell your daughter that if she talks baby talk you will not respond. You can also say the same thing to her friend and that baby talk is for babies only and not 6 year olds .......that since there are no babies in the house they must speak normally.......who knows, anything could work lol..just be firm, :)

Thanks Tally-ho, I'm guessing you are right, but it is very irritating to watch it! And the big question is, how much should or can parents influence our children's friendship choice? I feel bad when I avoid them to meet up, which is daily thing.

Lots of children do this. I wouldnt worry about it they grow out of it soon enough.
