Someone very close to me in the UK, has a very serious gambling addiction. It's at least a couple of decades old. He does everything from betting on horses, thunder (something?) lottery, and some others that i don't remember! He spends all his money on it. He has no tv, no phone, no Internet, goes on bare minimum food, just so he can have money for gambling!

His daughter called me last night, and she was devastated. She asked me for help, I just don't know what I can do. Please help me, help them, if you have any ideas.

Thanks ever so much.

Irooni, you cant unfortunately. The decision is theirs and theirs alone. Like AA they have to hit rock bottom before they see the need and they may get there more than once. It's a terrible disease, addiction. I hope that your friend seeks help for herself and obtains the tools to manage and understand the situation. You can't help those who don't want to help themselves. Forgot to add, addiction can be extremely demoralising not only for the addict but the family and the need to help is sometimes overwhelming. Let your friend speak with gam anon, no one judges, they have all been in the same situation. Really is a great support for loved ones of gamblers. edited by littleone on 07/10/2011

This is an addiction like any other. There must be a chapter of Gamblers Anonymous in his area.
