What is it living on? Shall I just continue this way? Or will they live longer if I feed them?

Thanks

Irooni I think that I will test out this theory on my pets and see if the cats can live off air alone. Perhaps there will be some minerals in the dust floating around my house. Also the guinea *** and birds....heck....maybe my kids will survive too.

Thank you all. I think I will go back to my own old system and feed the little things; but this time much, much less.

She may have had her fish for over a year but my fish who gets fed every day and gets partial water change now and again has been with me for 4 years - and goodness knows how many years before with the EWer who gave him to me when she left the UAE. Please look after him :)

Ladies please get a grip!!! Don't turn this into an animal cruelty and animal rights thread! I posted to ask to make sure, despite what my friend said, has done and has worked. All I know is that there must be an element of truth to what she said, cause the fish lasting this long is surely better than what I did that killed them in a couple of days. I will start feeding them today and keep you posted. Please also ensure they are in an appropriate size tank, with an aerator, and only do partial water changes. When feeding them feed them one grain at a time for 2 mins making sure there is no waste left in the tank, overfeeding is a big killer of fish as the food decomposes and poisons the tank.

I dont know, she is convinced that they thrive on the minerals in the water and bacteria from the plants and pebbles in the tank!

Also did everyone read that the person who gave me this info, has had her fish for over a year now?? They are alive, well and look healthy!! If I didn't have a problem with this myself, I would not have posted about it here to ask! so when would she have decided to stop this 'diet' and feed them Irooni - when they stopped flapping their fins? I just find it extremely bizarre that anyone would, as I said below, deliberately make a decision to NOT feed a creature that was under their care

I am also having problems with why anyone would experiment with not feeding a living being to see how long it would go for without dying :(

I agree marink. Why would anyone deliberately (regardless of whatever they believed may/may not be in the water) not feed a living creature. There is something very wrong with this imo

Please please please feed the goldfish, even if just a little. I keep thinking about the poor little thing starving :( Ps. waiting for another thread inspired by the 'Goldfish diet!", where you eat nothing for 12 days, and then die

Never heard of goldfish surviving without food for a year. As a child we always had goldfish and some of them lasted for a few years, although we never overfed them which I think is one of the main reasons for them dying quickly. Once when my mother was cleaning out the fish tank, one of the goldfish escaped down the plug hole and she ran outside with a bowl and lo and behold the fish came out of the drain pipe. Another time we woke up in the morning to find my goldfish lying on it's side and I was upset that it had died, so my mother picked it up and started stroking it gently with her fingers for a few minutes, and it came to life again and lasted for months after that. I really thought my mother was a miracle worker after I witnessed this as a child. Egg: We won a lot of our goldfish from the fair as well :) edited by Alismum on 29/03/2013 Thats a lovely memory (I really thought my mother was a miracle worker after I witnessed this as a child.), the kids won our hercules on hook a duck at the fair and i was thinking oh god no how can i tell the kids they only live for a few days, i was preparing myself to tell them the next day when it died that it had gone to heaven but the little blighter lasted 12 years, he was a tough nut, we attempted to get more fish to join him but he murdered every one of them so we just let him be. He eventually died when we were away on holiday my dad saved his body until we came back so the kids could say farewell, they were gutted, even though they were a teens :-) We won a few of ours on Hook a Duck as well, and throw a ball into a bucket. They would let you choose your goldfish from a row of plastic bags. 12 years is a long time for a fairground goldfish, I think our longest was around 6 years. I know and im not convinced he was a goldfish i think they painted him he lost the gold colour and ended up a silver kind of colour Lol

Slightly disturbed by this thread and I'm sure traditionally these poor fish were released back into the wild after celebrations rather than left to die. Anyhow. Goldfish normally die due to a number of factors: 1) Someone puts them in a bowl. Really bad idea, they have little oxygen and suffocate. 2) Someone overfeeds them, they get bloated and constipated, can't swim properly and suffocate alternatively the food decomposes in the tank and causes nitrate levels to rise (see 3) 3) Someone doesn't clean the tank, the nitrate and ammonia levels rise and the fish dies drinking and breathing it's own urine and faeces 4) Someone overly cleans the tank and doesn't cycle it properly (does a complete water change all the time) the balance of the tank is affected, the natural organisms that should be there to clean up the waste products in the tank are destroyed then (see 3) Although still speculative scientific studies are now leaning towards the belief that fish (in fact goldfish were used for the studies) consciously feel pain and show fearful avoidance behaviour. Keeping fish is not as easy as it seems but once you have a tank set up correctly you need only feed them a small pinch of food a day (only as much as they can eat in 2mins) and do a frequent partial water change. To set up a tank an air filter and gravel are helpful to ensure the fish gets enough oxygen and that there is bacteria in the tank to help break down waste. Live plants reduce stress and also assist in the natural balance of the tank. Water test kits can tell you if nitrate or ammonia are at dangerous levels. The larger the tank the easier it is to keep the water clean and avoid the fish dying a horrible death. edited by RuthM on 29/03/2013

We buy goldfish for our new year (Nourooz) celebrations every year. Mine have always died the first few days. I changed their water everyday (with a bit of the old water and let the new water sit for a few hours first), fed them every day and used some sort of water conditioner. A friend's goldfish made it from last Nourooz to this Nourooz, a whole year!!! Without food! She says that the minerals in Dubai water are enough to keep the fish going!!! Don't know how scientific that is but the fish is alive and well! I thought I will try her way this year and this is the first year that they have lasted this long! edited by Irooni on 29/03/2013

Years ago, a friend of mine left on holidays to Peru and asked me to pass by her flat to water the plants once a week.....she forgot to tell me about her goldfish in her kids bedroom. She could not remember my phone number.. and spent a rotten holidays thinking about her poor goldfish , hoping I would be nosy and visit the entire flat....well I did not. When she got back after a month the goldfish was lying on its side as the water has evaporated ( no AC in the room ) and was still alive and within a few days was back to normal

My goldfish (from the fair in UK) lived for 12 blinkin years, he also survived for 2.5 weeks whilst we moved house without being fed in a sandwich box on the window sill because we forgot about him. Could not believe it, they usually die the next day but not this one. Lol.

It's probably living on the cr*p in the tank but its life will be prolonged by daily feeding (only a tiny pinch though!)
