Hello everyone!
So ever since we moved to Ajman I have started getting dandruff.
My scalp is flaky and itchy and also my hair has started falling out. This is really worrying me.
I'm not sure if the move to Ajman and the dandruff are related in any way but I'm looking for a good anti-dandruff shampoo that could help.
Please suggest something that you have preferably tried yourself.
Thanks a lot! =)

apologies to the OP if this is slightly off topic, wanted to ask The Russian, were you able to achieve normal growth after treatment? From what you have written here, it seems I suffered the same when I was around 12 years old, the dandruff is gone now, or at least stays at bay as long as i continue using a particular shampoo for it, but my hair has never gone back to how it used to be,. Is there anything that worked for you to get the hair that you used to have? Hi lilypad, well yes, my hair grew really fast during the next months BUT I got pregnant shortly after I started it so I am not sure what attributed more to the hair growth! Sorry if I can't be much help here. I can tell you what I used though - took vitamins A&E, iron, and some others which I don't remember (it was five years ago), and I had red pepper tincture & Vichy anti hair loss treatment for topical use. I've heard mesotherapy for hair works wonders but I never got to try it myself...

No problem, lilpad28. =) I've been wondering that myself, too in case I experience thinning. edited by Cheezu on 06/09/2012 :) Cheezu, you might want to give the product that you are using some time to work. A week or two maybe. Also make sure you have it on for at least 5 mins initially for it to work properly. I would still recommend you try the Bodyshop Ginger Anti dandruff shampoo, it retails for 40dhs so not expensive at all, and something you can continue using for life since its very mild. For my dandruff problem, I did use Alphosyl which has coal tar as an active ingredient, and it worked really really well, but with dandruff you need to find a lasting solution, since it almost always comes back once you stop using the shampoo that is working for you. And I hated having to use such medicated shampoo's on my already thinning hair. Also you might want to try applying warmed coconut oil once a week, since that can help clearing up dandruff. Good luck and I hope you find a solution.

OP, I had the same problem when I moved here. I used the Pantene anti-dandruff shampoo and it worked really well, and smelled lovely. HTH.

The Russian - I have been diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis a few years ago actually (it gets bad esp. in my ears and sometimes around my nose); however, I went to a dermatologist in the UK recently and he said that what I have is just normal dandruff which may be due to stress (I got married 2 months ago) and change of water/weather, etc. (I travelled a lot over the summer). He said it's actually perfectly normal to shed 100-170 hairs each day but to be honest, to me this seems like an immense amount. I cut my hair short after the wedding (it was waist length before) and when I had short hair a few years ago I'd hardly notice it fall out so this suggests that something is not right. wuffles - Thanks for your suggestion. The Ionyl T is great for flaky skin on the ears too-can vouch for that Cheezu, have you seen a dermatologist? I don't mean to scare you but I had a similar problem a few years ago and it turned into a disaster. My hair started falling out, I got some serums that were supposed to help, my hair kept falling AND I got dandruff as well, started using anti-dandruff shampoos & serums and ended up with a seborrhea - by the time I finally stepped into a dermatologist's office, my scalp was literally covered by crust (which the doctor called a "cardinal's hat"...). I'll spare you the details of the treatment process, but I did lose a lot of hair going through with it and it was terrible. Like other posters said, it's very individual - and your hair is definitely not something to experiment with... dandruff is ultimately a dermatological issue and the sooner you see a professional, the better!

I found Ionyl T worked really well for me-it is tar based but the smell doesn't linger-and neither does the itching

Just a small update - So I tried Soak N' Float. The itching has subdued but not completely. I think I have less flaking although when I woke up today I still saw visible flakes on my pillow (the cover is dark). I'm thinking of using Soak N' Float and maybe switching it around from time to time to baby shampoo and also trying T-Gel. My hair is falling a lot too so I decided to install a filter in the shower head. I went for a blood test and everything is OK with me; I don't have any deficiencies and my hormone levels are just fine so I think it's got to be the water. The doc also said that actual dandruff will not cause hair fall so I don't know what's wrong with me... =(

T Gel and Betnovate scalp drops (pharmacy) work wonders......I personally don't use the TGel available here as it is usually the French one and slightly different, I prefer the US OR UK one. I do have the Betnovate ointment as well as the scalp lotion. I used to use the ointment (and still do from time to time) for my face whenever I would get dry skin or a rash around my nose. However, they seemed to have changed the formula so now the ointment is clear and very oily (before it was white and thicker) which I don't like. The scalp lotion does not work as well as it used to unfortunately. Perhaps my scalp got used to it? I also read that it shouldn't be used long term as it can cause skin thinning and this got me worried. I use it sporadically when I really can't prevent the itching. Will try T-gel.

I've used T-Gel which I found to be effective. When my scalp was really itchy and dry I had very good results from using warmed olive oil, rubbed it in, wrapped my head in a hot towel (re-heating as necessary) for thirty minutes and then washed it. Do this once a week at night and you will still be able to have a quick shower in the mornings. Have you tried the warm oil method ? I got really good results from it and actually better than any shampoo that I have tried. I do it as and when required. edited by amelia on 03/09/2012

Keep in mind what works for others might not work for you. Its all trial and error,so dont go out buying in bulk just yet. On that note I will add products that worked for me. *JASON normalizing tea tree shampoo+conditioner.(organic shampoo and conditioner,so no SLS) *Bioderma Node DS+ Anti Pelliculaire (very moisturizing to hair) *Polytar Liquid (smells disgusting but works great) Yeah, that's the thing. The reason I created the thread is because stuff like Head & Shoulders and Clear just doesn't work for me. I'm a little apprehensive about Lush because it's a shampoo bar as opposed to liquid shampoo and I've never used that. I have heard of Polytar but apparently it's quite strong. Have heard good things about Neutrogena. I hope something helps with the dandruff and itchiness!

Most pharmacies should stock T-Gel.

amkcbrandon, I bought the Lush shampoo bar today. Planning to try it tomorrow. Does anyone know where I could also get the Neutrogena T-Gel? Can you get it at Boots by any chance?

Previously, I've ordered all my stuff from the UK website, if I can stand to wait for it (which I usually do, because I HATE to get low on my products!). The UK prices are cheaper, and I always order a TON of stuff. I wouldn't order from them now, though (only because the weather is so hot, and a lot of the stuff I buy has a tendency to melt in the heat!). Also, I was in the US before and there wasn't a shop near me. BUT -- now that I'm in Dubai -- there's a Lush store in the Dubai Mall (which I love and go to about once a week just to buy a little somethin' somethin' -- the girls in there are super fab and I love love love the smell of all their products -- their stuff is seriously my fave in the WORLD!). They have a Facebook page (Lush UAE) which says they also have stores in Deira City Centre, Mercato and Mirdiff City Centre. I haven't been into either of those yet, though. Definitely pop into one if you can -- they're great about letting you sample stuff to see if you like it (yet another reason I am in love with them -- when my daughter & I go we could seriously spend hours ... and lots of cash!). No, I don't work for them -- but I would probably move into a store if I could!

Any idea where I could get them - pharmacy or do I need to order online? You can get them from the Lush shops, there's one in Mercato, one in Mirdif City Center, one in Dubai Mall and one in Deira City Center. I can also recommend the Snake Oil Bar.

The Lush shampoo is called "Soak & Float" -- they also have a treatment (Snake Oil Scalp Treatment Bar). I haven't used it, but my brother's girlfriend has insanely sensitive skin and a milli allergies and swears by both. I bought them for her one Christmas and now she orders them in bulk! I use just about every other thing Lush makes, though, and I'm in love with them all -- so I'd definitely recommend them! Thank you so much, amkcbrandon! Thanks for the replies, everyone! I hope I can find something. Any idea if there is lotion I could massage into the scalp and just leave it in? I'm a little afraid to use oil as I heard it can clog up your pores and cause more hair fall plus my hair is on the oily side.

The only thing that has worked for me and still does (thank god! since I had it bad) is the Ginger Anti Dandruff shampoo from the Body shop. The good thing is,its mild so you dont have to worry about continued use. My scalp starts itching and I start noticing flakes whenever I run out of it and start using any other shampoo..That's when I have to make a quick run to the mall to stock up again. HTH

Is there any good shampoo out there though? Or a leave-in lotion which could help... I usually just take quick showers in the mornings and I'm out.

Try rinsing your scalp with Apple Cider Vinegar after shampooing your hair. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash it off. The smell will go away after your hair dries. Thanks! Any idea where I could get that? Or do I need to mix vinegar and apple cider?
