Help with thrush / UTI - pain getting worse!

I've just finished a course of steroids and antibiotics for a bad case of bronchitis. Yesterday symptoms of what I thought were UTI reoccurred (had it before) so went to Dr this morning. Dr said the dose should clear it up as he thinks it is thrush, a side effect from the antibiotics and nothing showed up in my urine test. He prescribed 1 tablet Diflucan and Canesten pessary tonight. I took the Diflucan at lunchtime today and it's now afternoon but the pain is getting worse and feels like I've got something clawing my insides out and big throbbing twinges. It is soooo uncomfortable :-(.

Anyone know how long it takes for the Diflucan to kick in? I'm probably being impatient but the pain is really constant! I thought drinking cranberry would help but then just read that it might aggravate the thrush. Started taking taking probiotics as well as couple of doses of Ural to make my urine more alkaline.

Can anyone help with relieving the symptoms? Otherwise he told me to get checked out by gynae if the Diflucan doesn't work.

TIA!

Ural is good and has helped flush my system. I am also taking Cranberry Plus with Probiotics by BioCare which you can get at Organic Cafe and you have to keep this in the fridge. Actimel and Yakult are also supposed to help but Yakult is very expensive!

For the UTI go and pick up some Ural sachets at a pharmacy; they're just powder sachets that you put into glasses of water and drink. If I take 3 a day for a few days it really helps....think it reduces the acid in your bladder

Refrigerated probiotics are available in Dubai, but not in every pharmacy. There is an excellent brand called Ultimate Flora with billions of friendly bacteria, and it costs an arm and a leg... I didn't read all the posts, just scanned through them... if you still have pain with all the stuff your doctor gave you, take Voltaren 50 mg as needed, works excellent with pains from urinary/genital tract. Ibuprofen should work as well. Hope you get better soon!

Take lots of probiotics!!! I'd take them for a good month anytime you have antibiotics, as they kill of your good flora and make you prone to infection again, as this weakens your immune system. Can you get refrigerated probiotics in Dubai? Our family uses stuff that my naturopath prescribed, pretty high potency, and I hope we can get them in Dubai, as they are fantastic against tummy bugs, as well. Hope you feel better!

Gynae said no pelvic infection but suspected that the antibiotics messed up the flora of the good bacteria in the plumbing region. The diflucan and canestan also takes up to 2-3 days to work so I was being impatient. Said drink lots of cranberry juice, water, take probiotics, eat live yogurt and also gave me lotraderm cream for the itchiness. Also I should have taken ibuprofen for the pain instead of suffering through it. So I did and it worked. Thanks for your advice ladies!

canesten does help in thrush as i was having it for the last 3 or 4 months. pain and itching was becoming unbearable so i took a week course i.e 6 days med. along with canesten cream. but another strange thing has happened since i developed this infection. i remain extremely dry :( during...... so it is really painful. can someone help ???? sorry for putting another thing in this thread Sounds like you may still have thrush. There are some strains which are resistant to canestan and if you have had it for that long and have what appears to be symptoms of it still sounds like you may have one of those strains. There are more powerful anifungals for resistant strains but you really need to be checked by a gyneae if you have had it for so long. You can reinfect yourself through your underwear. You should only wear cotton as underwear needs to be washed on the highest temperature as only boiling kills the fungal spores if they are on your underwear / sheets. It is also possible your Oh is also infected and you reinfect each other (men can be asymptomatic). Your 3- 4 month history suggests this. You would both need to be treated.

Thrush can be quite painful. The Diflucan does take a few days to kick in. Wash yourself with Lactacyd ( not sure of spelling - white bottle with pink writing) available from pharmacy specifically for intimate hygiene - not regular soap or body wash as this seems to make the irritation worse. Apply Canestan or Daktarin cream if it's not too uncomfortable but I find when it's very uncomfortable, I need a cream that has cortisone in it too, like Lotriderm, Panaderm or Quadriderm. It makes a massive difference with the cortisone in it. Wear a panty liner and only wear cotton panties. Any synthetic panties make it worse. Wear loose clothing. Don't eat any sugar/ sweets excessive fruit as sugar feeds candida ( thrush). Hope u feel better soon.

keep on drinking more than 9 glass of water so it will flash out the bacteria. You can also use antibiotic if you found it untolerable already. Using more antibiotics are not going to help! The problem is caused by antibiotics in the first place, this will only make it worse! Antibiotics KILL all the good bacteria in the body, so they have to be put back. Its correct that it won't help with thrush. For bad UTI'S and pelvic infections antibiotics are the only thing that will work. Agreed, but you wouldn't take them without seeing a doctor first and having a proper diagnosis. Having had PID, the antibiotics used to treat it knock you for six and completely wipe you out. So until a diagnosis of that is made by a medical professional, I wouldn't advise anyone to take anymore antibiotics. people pop those things like they're sweets and then wonder why they're sick all the time. Yes - not to mention the way we over-use antibiotic they'll be useless soon enough. Can't remember if they knocked me for a six - but remember at the pharmacy I shrugged off his antibiotics once and went home smugly with my ural and cranberry juice as this usually worked. I was back sheepishly asking for drugs a couple of days later when it was so bad I could hardly walk, lol. Its so unpleasant, wouldnt wish it on anyone.

Don't think I am very impressed with a doctor with this attitude ! Sending you off to someone else? Your description sounds like a UTI ( One of the most painful things ) and you should be getting a targetted antibiotic if that is the case. I am a firm believer in listen to your own body.

The Canesten should help. Otherwise, if you can find a female pharmacist, they are helpful in suggesting various topical creams, etc.

Just make sure you check the percentage of cranberry on the side before you choose which one to buy... some of them are as low as 20%. Also the less sugar the better. You can also take SPASMO tablets from the chemist to relieve the aches..... edited by roysie on 29/05/2012

If using yoghurt, it has to be a 'live' yoghurt. Sadly, antibiotics and thrush often go hand in hand :( Sanddy is right you can buy Trimethorpim over the counter here which i have used for awful UTI's. Cranberry juice is good too. I hope you feel better soon!

I'd also take pain killers which will help with the pain, until the Diflucan kicks in. I used to suffer really badly from recurrent bouts, so I'm really sympathising with you on the pain. It's so uncomfortable. It doesn't sound like it's a recurrent thing for you, probably just the anitbiotics, but Holland & Barrett do a very effective supplement called Yeast Raiders which I've found helps a lot. FFx

The Diflucan normally takes a couple of days to do its work. Thrush should be uncomfortable but shouldn't give you serious pain. I don't like to speculate but it sounds more like a pelvic infection - this can also be caused by the over use of anti-biotics as they've killed off all the good bacteria. I've had it an it can be excruciating. If the pain is very bad, I would head to a gynae asap for a pelvic exam.

The diflucan can take a while longer than this to work. Sounds gross - but plain yoghurt relieves thrush due to all the right bacteria in it. You can apply it to tampax for internal thrush or wear with a sanitary pad for external thrush. Cranberry juice works great for UTI - I don't know if it affects thrush or not. You can also get some ural granules to dissolve in water which also help. For the UTI I've only had it once where Ural and cranberry did not help - in that case I was able to get the correct antibiotics over the counter that clear it up within about 24hrs.
