keep a close eye on her breathing - if she seems to be getting too out of breath take her home immediately. I always keep ice in the freezer (available in bags from petrol stations) especially at hot/humid times of year - for use in filling up a basin (for a pomeranian size dog) or adding to the bath tub (for a larger dog) not too deep - maybe up to the dog's knees - that way puppy can get her feet cooled off (which is one of the few ways dogs rid themselves of excess heat through their pads) if really hot she can lie down and drink.
It is scary to have a dog that has overheated - my dog will "eat" ice cubes but not all dogs will. Keep the bag of ice in the freezer for use as described above (don't force her to dunk, if she's hot she'll do it on her own)- and have the AC as high as it will go and a fan blowing if possible. It's hard enough for us with sweat glands galore but it's really hard for furry creatures with few sweating outlets - like dogs.
Ahh Greenish your so sweet thank you.
She is Pomeranian. VERY high energy bless her. She gets so excited when i walk in the door her eyes practically roll. :)
So you get the best advice for your dog, what breed and energy level is it? A little Jack Russell ball of energy will have very different exercise needs to a similar sized daschund. ;) Flat faced (brachycephalic) breeds like pugs will be different again...
Heat stroke is a real risk, especially for brachycephalic dogs. A man used to walk his boxer past my villa at the exact same time every day for almost two years, and for a long time before we moved in I'm told. One day he walked past without the dog. His dog had just dropped dead the day before...a very, very hot summer evening (7pm-ish, almost the worst time for dogs). :(
If you walk early in the morning or much later at night during the hot months (lowest humidity) and you understand the needs of your particular dog, all will be well. :D
Hi, how long should you walk a toy size (under 10kg) puppy (well 6 months)?
Especially now it is cooler, maybe they can go for longer?
As my friend scared me, telling me she knew of a dog that died of heat exhaustion?!
Once a day/twice a day and for how long?
At the moment im doing once a day for 20 minutes but i feel that's not enough for her.
Please advise xx
