Thanks...:) I have done pretty much all that, i.e. drag, click trim, save as... I guess I was expecting something to say "done" etc., & when it reverted to original size I was losing it! I'll give it a try tomorrow w/fresh eyes and clear brain......fingers crossed...

Hi KCQ, I must confess that I don't know what is causing your problem, so I'll talk you through the process and see if this works. 1. Open the file in QuickTime Player as normal. 2. Click on 'Edit - Trim' in the menu. 3. Trim the movie to the size that you want, using the drag bar at the bottom of the window and once complete click 'Trim' on the right side of the drag bar. 4. Once trimmed as you wish then 'Save As' and name the file. This should work. I suspect that the problem may be that you are not clicking 'Trim' before actually saving the file. As for the 'Compress' problem. Again I have no idea what is causing the problem as the software required to complete this is bundled with the Mac. By right clicking on any file a menu should appear and below 'Get Info' you should see 'Compress xxxxxx' (xxxx being the file name). Clicking on this should then create another file with the same name but the extension of 'zip'.

Hi Quikchange, Without further information I'm just guessing at your problem, I'll give a solution to that, if it doesn't work (because I've guessed wrong) let me know and we'll try something else. I'm guessing that you dragged the files directly from the camera onto your Mac? If you did they would have come across as MTS files which is the the HD file format used by Sony (and many others). iMovie can't process MTS files but there are a couple of solutions. 1. Google 'MTS converter for mac' and this will come up with a few free options for converting the files although be aware that the free programs may have restrictions. 2. The simple option is to connect your camera to the Mac via the USB lead in the usual manner, start iMovie. Then go to 'File - import from Camera' This will import the files directly into iMovie to allow you to edit etc the clips. Once you have edited them you just click 'share' to complete them as you wish. I hope this helps; if I'm totally off the mark let me know and will find another solution.

andi-diver - as you seem to be a mac and video expert can I ask you a question. I have a new sony hd camcorder and i want to upload onto my mac to then use imovie to edit the film. However i think that the format of the video is wrong for the imovie. Do you know an easy way to convert it? Thanks in advance!

Andi_Diver....thanks, you're a gem... success, whoop, whoop !!!:) Not sure why my MacBook does not right click and produce the drop menu w/compress option as they advised in forum, but thankful you came along and sorted it out for me! Have a great 2011 ! edited by KCQ on 04/01/2011

Hi KCQ, Thanks for the additional info. Just compressing the video won't really work as you can compress the video in a zip-file sufficiently to reduce it from 64mb to 25mb. Let's try the easiest way first. Open the file in QuickTime just like you have been doing and once it is open, click on 'Share' on the top tool bar. Then select 'iTunes'. A box will then open asking you to choose a size for the movie file. There will be three choices and underneath each choice it will show the finished file size. Simply choose the biggest file size below 25mb and click 'share'. Once the file is processed it will automatically drop it into your iTunes. If you drag the file from the iTunes window onto your desktop it will be easy to locate for emailing. This is a pretty simple process despite it sounding complicated. If you have problems or it doesn't work just let me know and we'll try another route. Hope that helps.

Thanks! here goes... yes, "filmed" the bit I wanted on my Nikon and transferred to my MacBook...it says 64MB. I was attempting to attach to an e.mail & a sign popped up informing me it has to be 25MB or less. Went to MacBook forum and tried to follow various instructions, not successfully :( I have tried right clicking, nothing happens. When the vid plays back it's doing it thru QuickTimePlayer --hubby set all this up but too busy to help me thru w/this right now. On the forum it says go to the file and right click but being the total dinosaur, i can't locate a file...(??) I hope you can decipher all that and try to guide me , thanks! :)

So that I can try and help I'm going to risk sounding pedantic - what exactly do you want to do? Have you already downloaded the video from the camera to the MacBook? Do you want to reduce the size of the file to enable you to email it etc? What size is it at the moment? If you haven't done it yet and answer these I'll try and provide a solution. HTH

To compress items: Do any of the following: Select the item or items you want to compress and choose File > Compress. Control-click an item and choose Compress from the shortcut menu. In a Finder window, select one or more items and choose Compress from the Action menu (looks like a gear). If you compress a single item, the compressed file has the name of the original item with the .zip extension. If you compress multiple items at once, the compressed file is called Archive.zip. To uncompress (expand) an item: Double-click the .zip file. The above was from help in mac i just typed in "compress" and there's a bit more info in there too.
