I am planning to get a few chickens and hold them in my garden for some nice fresh eggs :-)
Is that even possile in Dubai?
Any idea where I can find out what they need to be happy chickens that lay good eggs?
Thanks :-)

I am quite aware that cockrells don't lay eggs. However, for some breeds of hens you do need a cockrell to ensure that they lay. There are hybrid breeds and for these you don't need one so it all depends on what you decide to keep. My DD lived in Umm Sequim when she had to complain about the cockrell. All villas (apart from theirs) were occupied by locals and the Municipality rule also applied to them, hence the noise stopped.

Cockrels dont lay eggs anyways, so you wont be needing one of those ;) Years ago we had 2 Guinea fowls in our villa in Jumeirah; thier eggs were yummy. I guess it depends where you live. Area's such as Al Barsha and Jumeirah where there are local families around it shouldnt be a problem as they also keep chickens and goats, however I dont think it's allowed in gated communities such as the Ranches or the Springs. I know of a family that are keeping 2 peacocks in their villa in the Ranches, and we all know they can be quite noisy; They have been there for over a year so I guess if they are not bothering anyone, then no one cares.

Obviously fresh eggs each day sounds lovely but be prepared for some early morning wake up calls from the cockrell and possible complaints from your neighbours. My DD had this problem with one of her neighbour's cockrells (even though the villa they were in was in the next road) as they and the children were all being woken at 4 a.m. every day, so it shows how the sound travels. In the end she had to 'phone the Municipality as it became such a nuisance. The guy was ordered to keep the cockrell quiet or get rid of the hens altogether and this solved the problem.

You need to contact shazman, she has posted a lot about this topic before. Not sure if you are allowed to keep hens in residential areas, it would depend on where you live. Anyway check out this thread http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=84639&Page=0
