Thanks fairycakeyumm. I did think of that, but if she uses the mobile to make/receive personal calls then I'm not sure what would stop her using my landline? At least the mobile is capped with whatever I pay for the charge card - the landline calls could run all month and end up costing us a fortune. It is a really difficult situation as she is great with my baby.
She went to bed early last night, so we are having the chat with her tonight. We will be firm, but pleasant about it and say that if she uses this credit up then it will be taken out of her house money for next month and if this continues to be a problem we will tell Howdra (which would mean she would get a fine).
I hate having to deal with this kind of thing. Cringe!!!
We have had our permanent Howdra maid for two weeks now and it is still a rocky ride. It is the first time we have had a live in maid, but we had been using Howdra to provide us with a weekly cleaner (who was excellent!) for about 8 months.
Our maid is nice enough, but has started to get comfortable already. We gave her a mobile phone so that she can contact us in emergencies and in 10 days she has used up all 120Dhs credit we put on it (we had already given her 75Dhs of phone cards so she could call home). We warned her once already, so tonight we have to give her a second warning to stop using the phone to call home everyday.
I was expecting a more 'switched on' maid, as I have had to show her how to do everything and I think Howdra kind of just dump them here with little help on adjusting to a new life in Dubai.
At the moment I don't know whether or not I'm going to keep her.
Not sure if this helps!
Have you not got a house phone, tell her she can only call you on it no one else ...that way if she spends her money in a week on her phone it's her fault she has to wait till she has got paid....sometimes it's like having a teenager in your house, let her earn the phone cards say you do a good job we will reward you etc , good luck don't give her something for nothing.

Flowergirl, I swear that I would have written your post, word for word, except ours isnt live in. We are on our 4th maid since September and she came last Thursday for her usual three hours and I had to re do the whole cleaning again. What I am paying for I have no idea. We have had nothing but drama's with this one, but she does what needs to be done. We had the best maid from them two years ago but she went home. Since then its been a disaster. I dont know what Howdra are doing with training and have suggested to them on may occassions that they need consistency with their cleaners and what is expected as a minimum. Obviously we all like things done a certain way so there is room for change. We are seriously considering cancelling our contract with them because its just not worth our while, particularly as I end up doing a proper job of cleaning while I think they are just doing a cosmetic clean.
Has anyone used Howdra Maids and happy with their performance and attitude?
We have been very unlucky with maids from Howdra - Having our 3rd one now since since September last year - 1st one liked to 'party' and entertain opposite gender too often, 2nd one hid her (dangerous) illness from both the Agency and us which could have jeopardise our family, and the current one is on a temporary basis whilst I wait for new batch of new maids coming from Phillipines. We would not want to hire this one on permanent basis.....
As a company, Howdra has been great in finding a replacement, quickly, but somehow their quality is not what I expect. Perhaps we have just been very unlucky with this 'lottery"....
So, in case your contract is running up with Howdra and have been happy with your maid - I'd like to see if I can take over your maid - either still thru Howdra or directly.
I am hopeful we can 'win the loterry in maids' (too) one day SOON :)
