I was wondering if it would be a good idea to hold a coffee morning seminar type event once every 4 months or so for new people to Dubai (unless of course this is already done and in that case don't read any further!).

Rope in some of the old timers to give talks on the general do's and don'ts of living in Dubai and to answer questions. Also have a booklet available for them (I have a lot of experience in writing and delivering training packages - albeit for middle management but the concept is the same)

The topics covered could include:

Dress
Do's and Don'ts when driving (e.g. gesturing)
Ramadan
Hospitals / Clinics
Schools
Public transport
Teens
etc etc....basically all the topics that come up time and time again on the board.

The idea would be that the seminar is free but a nominal fee be paid for the booklet to cover printing costs and coffee.

If we could get a small group together to manage it (help write the material and to speak at the seminar) then i htink it could be a really useful tool for new people coming to Dubai and help stop people getting into trouble.

Any thoughts?

but info coming from on here is general info and not stuff that you would need to worry about 'stealing' you could def do this! you could put it all together, approach event companies and ask them to take you on part time (giving you labour card etc ;)) and you could be in charge of promoting the seminar to companies and then delivering it too. It's a great idea. I know a few companies that would send staff to these if it was a kind of "new to Dubai" seminar ;) Really? Ok will have a think and start building a training booklet. Might be calling on you ladies for info and input!

you should write it all yourself and then approach some of the events companies and ask them to take you on :) For a fee having copywrited it first. Well therin lies the problem. Most of the info would come from Ladies on here so not sure it can be something that oculd be copywritten (is that a word?) Was thinking more along the lines of getting a group together to come up with an all singing all dancing booklet and then go and deliver it as a seminar. perhaps something companies would be interested in for their hew recruits. have soo much experince in this area! eta..by area I mean field of work edited by Willamina De Vault on 10/04/2011

WdV, your idea of a booklet is a great one and really needed for tourists/residents alike. Have you thought of approaching Emirates/Municipality and showing them an example? well I got hte idea after watching an episode of Michael Palin Around the World. He was in the Philipines and went to a seminar for women who being "exported" to the Middle east to work. they were being given the low down on what to expect, how to behave etc so I thought it would be a fabulous idea for new people to Dubai. A proper seminar..not a coffee morning.

Hi Willamina Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. EW do host a number of events throughout the year, for 'old and newbies' with information relating to life in Dubai. The next one will be on Sunday 18 September called YOU! in Dubai (look out for more info coming soon). We also have a page on our site which covers most of the [url=http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_faqs.aspx'>topics[/url'> you have mentioned. Hope this helps edited by admin on 10/04/2011

I would have attended if it had been available when I first arrived and wasn't ridiculously priced.

I don't think it's a bad idea. At least newbies thinking of attending will know that other newbies will be there and that not everybody will know everybody else.
