In the UAE, it is not uncommon to hear of "someone who knows someone" who has an exotic or extremely rare pet. By this I do not mean a special breed of cat or dog, but lions and tigers and bears (oh my!). For some, such an animal is a status symbol; for others, it is simply the satisfaction of knowing they have something rare in their possession... read the article :

a big article will be soon a famous news paper in dubai regarding a baboon found in Sharjah with so much injury that they had to put it to sleep. MONKEYS ARE PRIMATES AND "PRIMATES" AS PETS ARE AGAINS THE UAE LAW N16 FOR THE RESPECT OF ANIMALS WELFARE. the " Veterinarian of the Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife- Sharjah" wrote another article in the Wildlife Middle East magazine to discourage people from having primates as pets. This is the link below. very interesting : http://www.wmenews.com/newsletters/File/Volume-3/Issue-1/WME_V3I1_E_P4.pdf but of course... illegal monkey are still arriving in UAE : http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/environment/influx-of-baboons-entering-uae-illegally-1.774088 DM inspectors need to drive the streets of Mirdif around dusk. On MCC side I used to see two separate families walking their chimps almost every night. :(

Awful...I'll never forget my friend looking for a villa that had a decent yard for her dog. When she went upstairs while looking around one villa she looked over the neighbour's fence and there was a cheetah roaming free in the garden. (emaciated and miserable cheetah :( )

You must read the tiger's story which is published in Petme magazine this month. The tiger is now at the Wild Life Centre in Abu Dhabi and thanks to them, he is having a better life now.. But he was really tortured, I just cannot believe why people do this to the animals. The other day, I was at one of the clinics and 3 arabs came to take their Cheetah!!! I seriously dont understand where is the enjoyment of keeping these animals.. Do they think it is funny, or they think their friends think that they are cool people if they have cheetahs and tigers.. I am an arab too but seriously, we need more education over here..

Nothing new with this. But even worse, the majority of the big cats have their claws and teeth pulled out so they can't bit or scratch. It's ridiculous - then where do these animals end up? The Dubai Zoo.
