I got caught a couple of times with Aramex Shop & Ship. The threshold is $250, and above that you pay customs / import duty. S&S, these days, open every package I get -- no exception.

It is 5% above a certain threshold - think 500 AED. Fedex pays the amount based on the declared value and collects it from you. For deliveries through the post office, you need to pay it when you to pick it up. Whether you get charged at that time depends on the person across the counter :) You can even request him to exclude certain items - typically, they look for big electronics esp laptops.

Yes, although from my experience it depends on who's working at the courier/customs office on the day??? Brought in a Kindle from US via S&S in November and had to pay duty for that, although didn't have to pay any extra for another package from UK a few weeks earlier.

I dont know - this was about 5 years ago and it was about £300 worth of stuff. See, I don't remember ever having to pay anything, and hence wondered if rules had changed!
