I am a mother of two LOs (almost 4 and 9 months) and am considering going back to work. We just moved here about 2 months ago and feel like I'm going a bit stir crazy not working. My husband works as a chef and works extremely long hours, so I never see him. He also isn't making enough money for me to have a car or pay for lots of activities for my children. I would like to contribute to our household income but my experience is also in restaurants and I don't think I can make enough money here in the hospitality business. We ran our own restaurant for the past 10 years in Canada so my experience is quite diverse (also lots of bookkeeping, HR, etc). Any ideas what I can do? I am going to be 40 this summer and feel a little frustrated that the work experience I have gained over the past 20+ years doesn't seem to be worth any here.

Thanks for your replies. I would like to work full time or close to it but any jobs I have looked at either I am not qualified for, or don't pay enough. I've been thinking probably office work of some sort, preferably HR. Nursery/ child care is going to be expensive plus I would probably need a car depending on where the job was located. I've also thought about taking some online courses that might help me find a job but I don't really know where to start. I feel like I'm starting out all over again (which is kind of exciting) but difficult when one has a family to care for too!

Hi CABear -would you be looking for full-time or part-time work, school hours or flexible? Have you worked out how much you need to earn to make returning to work worthwhile (nanny or nursery etc), assuming that you want sow financial gain from returning to work. I would suggest that you complete a full transferrable skills list based on your experience. Perhaps you could work as an Office Manager, HR Coordinator, Bookkeeper or a Hospitality Trainer (not sure where these jobs exist). A classroom assistant would be a nice job, but would barely cover the cost of returning to work.

Have you looked on the jobs section here? Maybe you would consider being a classroom assistant, you would work short hours, holidays off etc. I would think most school are recruiting now.
