Has anyone traveled to the USA with their maid? Is a visa required? How long does the process take? Any other information which I might want to know?

TIA

We took our housemaid to the us 2 summers ago, and it really wasn't that complicated. Online app from us embassy website, then booked appt online for the interview. Pay fee at nbad. To interview take printed online app, nbad receipt, pics, passport for her and you. At embassy fill out form agreeing to pay min wage and give time off. It also states you are responsible for any medical, food and housing. She does not have to have worked for you for one year; that's a european requirement, not a US requirement. They will ask her a few questions like: does she know where in the US she will be staying, how long, does she have relatives in US, does she understand her rights on the form, does she know how to call 911 for emergency, what she will be doing, and does she know that she is not allowed to wk for anyone else while in US. Total interview was less than 5 mins. Visa was ready 2 days later. It was painless. just be sure that she is under your sponsor if your husband might not travel with you. She must be with her sponsor to enter the US. Ours is under our husband for uae cisa, but under mine on us visa cause husband was not travelling with us at the time. Good luck!

Good luck with your complicated process. And good luck that she doesn't do a runner on you. Seems to be the in thing to do lately with those maids/nannies. I have 2 friends that were stupid enough to do this in the last few months and BOTH lost them in the US within a few days of arrival.

If it is to look after your kids, it seems more logical to use a part-time nanny service in the area in which you are going. If it is for housework, you can just get a part-time cleaning service to come in. In the countryside, it is easily $25 an hour for a cleaning lady.

My boss and his family took their Philipina maid back with them to the US last year. He had to apply to the US Consulate nr Trade Centre for her visa and go with her when she went along for an interview with all her paperwork, his passport etc. I remember that she had to travel on the same plane as the family when they went over other than that it seemed to all be straightforward.

Also, you have to pay her U.S. minimum wage. Not sure of how it has to be documented or how/if they check, but that plus the flight would make it pretty expensive.

Yes a visa is required and a very complicated process! Best to check with the US authorities because their will be several hoops to jump through. Good luck!

Yes, a visa is required. It would be a long and complicated process. Your maid must have worked for you for more than a year to even be considered.
