Ahh thanks everyone for your help! Yes, it turns out I have very minimal space left. Laptop is 4yrs old and coincidently I'm updating this month with a new one. For the time being I have just deleted a couple of my albums that I know we have on our other computer so I am good to go, for the moment at least, till DH returns and can really get stuck into making more space and storing it on an external hard drive.

Not sure how old your computer is or how much you've accumulated on it, but mine is about 5 years old and at one point had over 8000 photos stored on it. Takes up HUGE amounts of space because iPhoto keeps all the originals of the ones that you've tinkered with which means there are a lot of duplicates. My Mac was running like a sloth the other day and when I checked my hard drive (right click on the hard drive icon on your desk top and go to 'Get info' -- it will tell you how much space you actually have) I was horrified to see I was almost completely full! I bought a really powerful external storage drive and took most of the photos off the computer, and also burnt the really important photos onto CDs just to be safe. Definitely delete whatever old stuff you don't need or just get them off your computer and onto an external storage device. Don't forget to empty the trash. Taking stuff off your computer is something that needs to be done regularly, unfortunately...

You can also try going to the home folder in your finder. That is, the one that's your name or whatever you've named your mac. Then go to the Downloads folder and sort by size so you can see what the biggest items on there are. This can work but all depending on what sort of stuff you download, if anything. If you download movies and stuff like that then they'll eat up space on your hard drive. Assuming you've watched them and don't need to keep them or assuming you have other stuff on there that is taking up space and that you don't need on your computer, you can move them to the trash. Don't forget to empty your trash!

When this happened to me, I purchased an external hard drive. I "moved" my library to this drive. Then I changed the settings in iPhoto to make the new external drive my "default" location for the library. After I was sure the photos were on the new external hard drive I deleted them from my Mac's "C" drive. The only disadvantage is that the external hard drive has to be connected to access my photos. But it works-- :)

Hi, As I was downloading photos from my camera to my MacBook the other day it said that my 'start up disc' was full. Now, when I go into iPhoto I'm getting this message "Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library.". What does it all mean? If I have to make more space, how do I do this? My DH is not here so I can't ask him. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)
