Hi does anyone use the Mirena for birth control?
Just had my 3 rd little one , and my OB suggests I use that? She wasn't really willing to discuss other options :@
I've not used birth control for five yrs or so, so I'm abit out of touch with the new options avalible.
Not sure wether to try the Mirena or use a pill ? Wondered what everyone else uses?
Tia

Love Love Love My Mirena. Best decision I ever made. I'm on my second one now and Haven't had any side effects. I love not having to remember to take my pill and can now enjoy *** more as i'm finally confident that my husband and I aren't going to have any mistaes before we're ready.

Why don't you just get the one with no hormones, instead of adding more hormones to your body?! :) Hmmm gonna research that now :) i was just about to suggest this...none of the hormonal side effects with this.

Hi ladies Thanks for all the replys, this is what put me off all the side effects, which I know can effect some and not others.i was keen first of all as I have heavy periods, I use to be on depo injection. And it was grt that my periods stopped, but it's not an option now as I have arthritis . I'm on lots of medication at the mo and I don't fancy alot more seide effects. Do any of the pills stop periods? Any reccomendations for the pill instead?

I've had mine for 3 years and have developed lumps in my breasts (fybroid cystitis [sp?'>) which are not linked in any way to cancer but can be a little painful. I can't sustain another pregnancy so need a very effective contraceptive and am useless at remembering pills so this was the best option for me. I love not having periods so am happy to put up with the minor side effects. Have lost over 14 kg in the past year so definitely no weight gain effects for me. Agree though that you need to look at all the options to find the one that suits your circumstances best. HTH. Just wanted to add that I have type 1 diabetes and have definitely not experienced insulin resistance and am more susceptible to yeast infections but have not experienced an increase since having the mirena implanted so I think 3pinplug's doctors were probably right that her symptoms were not related to the mirena. edited by Embo on 21/11/2011

I got constant weight gain despite a high level of exercise and incredibly sensible eating. It really mucked my hormones around and I was getting regular yeast infections and ended up with polycystic ovaries and insulin resistance. Had it taken out and finally starting to get on top of the weight problems. Doctors seem adament that my symptoms were not from the Mirena but they only started after I had it put in. Doctors also seem really reluctant to take them out. But then there are many women who have absolutely no problems with them. I did love the fact that my periods stopped and as another poster said, life was spontaneous. HTH

I'm on my 3rd one in 12yrs and am very happy with it and have had no problems with it apart from initial spotting the first few months with the first one. It certainly makes life much simpler and spontaneous! It doesnt suit everyone though and I'm sure you will get other views! HTH

If you are averse to using hormones, you could ask for the one which is hormone free (copper)

I am on my second mirena at the moment. I can't remember when I last had a period or any adverse PMS symptoms. Best thing I ever did.
