when we lived in the US my 2.5kilo, 3yr old schnauzer used to take Interceptor (prevention of heartworm disease, controls adult hookworms, and removes and controls adult roundworms and whipworm infections) and K9 Advantix (topical, pest protection - ticks fleas etc) on a monthly basis.

during his first vet visit here i was told by the vet that these things werent really necessary and to discontinue. Ive been meaning to follow up on this.... do you all give your dogs regular prevention treatements here? The vet's reasoning was that it wasnt common in this climate/region for the dog to catch these things. Really?!

In 10 years, with nearly a dozen animals (dogs, cats - my own and rescues) neither heartworm or fleas have ever been on the radar, let alone an issue in the GCC. The conditions don't exist here. I had a vet in Canada who insisted my animals be treated with flea medication (they rolled in the wood ashes put out on the driveway in January - so it must be flea dirt WTF) in January (that's what we use wood ash from wood stoves for in Canada - bonus to giving tire traction - there are no fleas outside in Canada in January). I tried to tell him that fleas were an unknown but ticks were a real problem in the GCC - but he knew better. A brief poll - how many pet owners here have had pets who gathered fleas in Dubai?

Actually Advantage spot on is available here which contains 2.5% moxidectin, which kills larval stages of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). Also Revolution spot on is effective as a heartworm preventive, killing the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). These spot on treatments cover a multitude of things and are available at your vets. Speak with your vet as to the best program/treatment to use for the individual animal.

marycatherine, I have never heard a herd of goats called a flock...I thought only birds were flock lol..so...here is something I pulled up :) It should be noted that one never speaks of a flock of cows. Cows are found in herds, not flocks, while goats may be found in herds, droves, toops, or trips. The animals most commonly found in flocks are sheep, and not goats.

I would get a second opinion on worming tablets. That said, I only worm my dog every 3 months or so. As for the other pests - ticks can be a problem depending on where you walk the dog. Keep an eye on him and check him for ticks every day - if you don't see any - your area may not be affected. Where I live, occasionally a flock of goats (or is that herd?) go up the street - they carry ticks and so I have to use frontline on the dog and occasionally have the garden sprayed by a professional pest control company - maybe 2x a year

No one treats for heartworm here as it 'doesnt exist', in fact you wont find the meds here anyways, you would have to bring them in yourself. As for intestinal parasites, this should be done every 3 months, and Frontline for fleas and ticks can be used every month, (fleas are rare here, and ticks are more common in the hotter months)

About once every 6 months i remember to! Depends on what eating and environment. Many things are not such a concern as in other countries, ie the Tick / flea problem here is quite minimal.
