Hubby and I were just talking about my moving here to UK. We have three cats and the new rule for bringing pets over here goes into effect on Jan 1st, 2012. We'll be coming here on the 2nd or 3rd. The new rule eliminates the 6 month wait period, so this is good.

so these questions are aimed at any of you who have brought pets over here to UK. What are the costs, rules, and anything else we need to know? Can we just take them the same time as us on the same flight? Are there different costs for different airlines? Are there agancies we should go through for animals?

Most importantly, how much would it cost for each of them? They are about 4, 3 and 2 kgs each. Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the info, mc. I thought 9,000 sounded crazy. Yipes, it's more than two adults flying return. I know that the rules are strict regarding carriers, they should each have their own. I'll call a few different airlines, including KLM. Another thing I tought of is getting them from the airport to our flat in East London. There must be a service that does this, or we might need to organize a friend to do this.

Shop around on the airlines (I recommend KLM because of how they handle pets in transit)- ask what the price is as "excess baggage" (they still fly cargo, but the rates are different). Putting them in the same carrier may or may not be allowed, again check with the airline in question. 9000 sounds really expensive to me - I've moved 2 cats and a dog in separate carriers from North America to Dubai (and back again) and for all 3 the last time it cost about AED5000 - but that was several years ago.

Thanks for the replies. marycatherine, the law has been changed so that as of Jan 1st, 2012, there's no more waiting period. We took them all for their shots in May, then I called the vets to ask about the blood test. they told me that we have to wait 1 month after the rabies shots and the other vaccinations. In this time, about a week after, there was a thread started on here to say that the new law will go into effect for 2012. So, it worked out to be the same - wait 6 months until Christmas, or just wait until New Years and bring them over with their passports.

A lady I was chatting to recently was going back to the UK with her cat and she was quoted 9,000dhs. This was to include the carrier etc. I am sure if the pet carrier is large enough cats can share, so this may cut down the costs.

contact a vet office that assists in the paperwork for relocation to the uk. They will be able to give you advice and guidance on the policies and procedures (but, and this is only an impression get confirmation) you will need 6 months leeway to get the shots, rabies tests, etc. that will meet UK guidelines CALL NOW>
