How's the property market in Melbourne currently? Suppose we decide to make a move, how easy is it for us to get a decent size house with a small garden? We don't mind if it is in the suburbs but what areas are supposed to be good considering DS would be around 1 when we move there. I want good schools, hospitals, nurseries etc within reach.

Also, if the market is on its way up at the moment, what should we expect to pay as rents?? Is the property market there like Dubai? Are apartments (units as DH calls them) better or Houses?

It really depends on what area you want to live in and that is usually decided by where you work, public transport requirements, budget and what lifestyle you are looking for. [u'>Schools -[/u'> Are you looking for government or private education? If private is religion a factor? Ranking website: http://bettereducation.com.au/SchoolRanking.aspx [u'>Hospitals- [/u'> Government hospitals are not in all suburbs but Australia has an extensive ambulance service for emergencies. Regionally it may be a greater distance and if you are in far rural area The Royal Flying Doctor Service is used. Will you have private health insurance or just the Government medicare system? If you have private health your options will be broader. Hospital Listing: http://www.health.vic.gov.au/hospitals/pubwebs.htm [u'>Nursery's -[/u'> Nursery's and child care centres are held to very high standards and if they are registered they will have passed all requirements. Pick where you are going to live and then find a centre you like rather than the other way around. Childcare Centres Association of Victoria: http://www.cccav.org.au/ [u'>Housing - [/u'>In suburbia you are more likely to find houses and freestanding units (multiple small villas on one property) and apartments in the city. REIV is the Victorian Real Estate Institute- http://www.reiv.com.au/home/default.asp Victorian Rentals: http://www.myhome.com.au/rent/vic/ [i'>I am a Perth girl so I am not a Melbourne or Victoria expert.[/i'> HTH :)

You are more likely to find a house than town house/flat in the suburbs. Real estae is a bit slow but no bargains-my daughter just bought her first home and they were eager to buy before houses went up again. Melbourne schools are good-personally I would go for the south eastern suburbs if your budget runs to that as there are some excellent public schools there and great hospitals. Prices will be higher near the sea/inner city etc of course <em>edited by wuffles on 09/02/2011</em>

Have a look at realestate, com.au .. Melbourne is a big place do you mean the city or suburbs ?Like in all places some suburbs are better than others . Price depends on how much you can afford to pay which will help in deciding where to live . Sorry can't help with what the market is like now .... Have fun looking....
