Has anyone had this done in Dubai? Night time contact lenses that correct your vision for the following day/couple of days. Can anyone shed some insight into the process and would you recommend? I know myself and I'm too scared to get LASIK so this is a possible alternative. TIA ladies Honestly, don't be scared to have LASIK - it was the best decision I ever made, changed my life! And I was one of the early candidates :)

I am an Orthokeratologist. I have been fitting custom ortho-k lenses for nearly 10 years, mostly in the United States, and now in Dubai. Orthokeratology, ortho-k, or OK has been around since the 1960’s. Back then it was a daytime lens that had limited success. In the 1990’s with the advent of highly oxygen permeable lens materials and new technology in lathes (the equipment that makes the lenses) reverse geometry lenses were possible. This gave way to accelerated orthokeratology, which refers to overnight lens wear. For simplicity, the “accelerated” part has been dropped and the procedure is simply called orthokeratology. HOW DOES ORTHO-K WORK? Ortho-k is a specially designed lens which is worn during sleep. At bedtime you put the lens in. While you sleep, the lens gently reshapes your cornea eliminating myopia and astigmatism. In the morning the lens is removed allowing you to see clearly all day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lens wear. The following night, you put the lens back in to maintain the new corneal shape. (similar to wearing a retainer for your teeth) Ortho-k is completely reversible. There is nothing permanent about it. This gives you the opportunity to safely have LASIK in the future if desired. There are a few methods for fitting ortho-k lenses. Most eye care professionals use a standard fitting set. These sets are limited to treating up to -4.00 diopters of myopia, and do not correct astigmatism. The method I employ is WAVE custom designed corneal lenses. I design each lens based upon the exact shape of the patent's corneas. With this custom software, I have treated myopia up to -8.00 with -3.00 astigmatism with success. For children orthokeratology offers myopia progression control. Research shows that children wearing OK lenses progress only -0.37 diopters over a 3 year period compared to the -1.50 diopter progression that kids who wear soft contact lenses and glasses experience. The benefits of orthokeratology for children are fantastic! Having clear unaided daytime vision gives kids the freedom to enjoy all sports, activities, school, ect without cumbersome glasses or contacts. Health-wise, keeping the eyes in a low correction, the lower the better decreases the chances for retinal diseases, retinal detachments, and glaucoma when they are adults. Additionally it would make refractive surgery such as LASIK safer when they are older. You are very informed. Most healthcare professionals, including ophthalmologists, optometrists and pediatricians have never heard of, or know little about ortho-k. Ortho-k is my passion! I am pleased to be able to answer some of your questions. I welcome the opportunity to answer any other questions you have. Please feel free to contact me via a private message if you would like more information. (Unfortunately I am not allowed to give my contact information on this forum because it is considered advertising and self promotion, which I respect.) I love the power of google!
