We have already made plans to celebrate both of our 40th birthdays this year when we go away at Christmas time. But I still want to celebrate and surprise DH regardless. But since this is an 'extra' I need to be careful with budget or he'll kill me. So, was thinking about a catered party at home for 15-20 people, relaxed, casual BBQ or Buffet style. Or, perhaps go to a restaurant so I have don't have to prepare? Figured option 2 might be expensive, but a lot easier? Plus it is work colleague mostly, so not sure of DH wants them all in his house? He is fussy with food though, so although I need budget, I need good food... any ideas???

Sharwarma man from Eat and Drink is approx. 750 dhs. and this provides about 140. Just used them (again !). They are brilliant, bring everything they need, are with you for about three hours and keep serving as required. Flavours on 2 is excellent, Thursday is Italian night but there is always other food besides pasta. Lots of starters and puddings. Cost is under 200 dhs. each and includes all drinks. There are vouchers in the Entertainer book for BOGOF but you would have to check that they will allow you to use them in their private room. edited by amelia on 17/11/2011

We went to the evening "brunch" on Thursday at Ember Grill at the Address Dubai Mall a couple of weeks ago and it was great. Great jazz and lovely food.

You could have a shawarma man come to your house. I've been to a few parties where there has been one and it's great. I think there is a place on Al Wasl Road (called Eat Drink maybe?) that does shawarma, I'm sure someone on here could give you the details. I've never had their outside catering but I've eaten in their restaurant at Maria Bonita mexican and it's fab plus really reasonably priced. They have a website if you google Maria Bonita Dubai.

I have an idea, at Towers Rotuna they have a private room to the right of the lifts on level 2, straight across the corridor from Flavours on Two where the buffet is! You could book the private room for you and your friends, but still have full access to the buffet.

Suzy - you are wanting brunch venue idea for a Thursday night? Yorky mentioned 'evening brunches'....but yes, it is for a Thursday evening - his b'day falls on a Thursday.

comparatively at home would be cheaper and would be my preference with kids. But if kids are older then I think it shouldn't be a problem. Well again depends on your budget. check out this deal and you can go through this website for more deals http://www.groupon.ae/deals/dubai/TheGramercy-main/1589291?nlp=&CID=AE_CRM_1_0_0_320&a=1910 I'm just trying to help here I hope no one deletes this thread Naveen: Thanks - just checked it out - not valid for Thursdays - this is a Thursday!! PollyDXB: my husband wouldn't like it if others had to pay - that's just him. In his culture its the birthday person that shouts...in mine, it's the other way round...the B person gets treated and usually everyone else pitches in, and it's not uncommon to day BYO! But DH won't do this... It was my birthday back in May - just arrived and had no friends so we didn't do a thing. My gift is our cruise in December. Yorky: do you have some names of the evening brunches?

Suzy, most people won't expect you to pay if you go out for a buffet, you of course would pay for yourselves and the kids. However if you have it at home, all the cost is on you. So I vote for go out! Plus it's your birthday celebrations too, why should you do all the work! Or you could get cateres, but that is your expense!

I don't really know what to do - home or out? Figured with kids, it is easier at home.... but out is less work but perhaps more expensive? I am quite new here so do not know theme places?? Lots of places do 'evening' brunches, and often have themes, such as Asian food, International etc. You can get some good deals for approx 200Dhs per person including alcohol. I guess it really depends on your budget, but I can imagine you would spend quite a bit even if you did something at home?

Why dont you go for a brunch or a theme evening somewhere so you know the fixed price for the food and drinks?

How about just cooking dinner for the two of you? Make it kind of private occasion. Plus romantic and sweet which will be absent with people around. Thanks Naveen, we have young kids and he is a family man, so would definitely want to have them with him to celebrate. We will have some quality time on our cruise that we have planned for the event in December. I just wanted to spoil him and make him the centre of attention for the evening...
