Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay, (not looking for anything fancy, just close to city centre and clean)? Is there a particular area which we should focus on looking for a hotel?

I have been to Prague so many times, I love it!! I would recommend staying in the old town or the Jewish quarter to ensure you can get around easy enough. Prague is a very easy city to get on foot but if you have had enough walking they have a fantastic metro system which is also very easy to use. The metro will take you to Prague castle & up to the top of Wenceslas Square. I have to agree with disastrous d about the restaurants, most of the good ones are around the old town. We have stayed in the City Hotel a couple of times because it is 2mins walk to the old town and is cheap & cheerful. The other hotels we have stayed in are a bit further out. Have a fantastic trip! I'm very jealous!!

I have stayed in Prague twice. The first time on wenceslas square and would not recommend it at all. It is not very nice at night. All the nice cafes and restaurants seemed to be in the old town side. We stayed in the Clarion which was perfectly nice for a short stay. Nothing luxurious but central, nice room and close to everything. Enjoy your trip!

the closer you are to the Jewish quarter means nearly everything is within walking distance. Prague is wonderful. If you go to the cathedral up at the castle go early (as in when it opens) as it gets crowded quickly with tour groups. I took a 2 or 3 hour trip on the river which was also very good. Suggest you try to eat in one or other of the little restaurants off the side streets where Prague residents go to eat - the menus are usually in English and you get another side of Czech life than the touristy ones on the city hall square.
