Hi all,

I am moving to Dubai in just under two weeks, and need some advice concerning getting repeat prescriptions for a medical condition.

For this condition, I am prescribed Glucophage, Femodette (a contraceptive) and Spironolactone and will need to continue taking these tablets. My GP has told me I should take the repeat prescription slip, as well as a note he has written, to a doctor in Dubai and they will continue to prescribe the medication to me.

Is it as straightforward as that? I will be getting medical cover as part of my employment package; would that cover repeat prescriptions.

Sorry to ask, but I figured it's better to ask people who know these things than look at loads of other websites!

Many thanks. :)

Thanks for all your help and advice. I will try to speak to my doctor here about finding out which other pills I can take with my PCOS. I am not married and am not taking it for contraceptive reasons. lidkekiwi Luckily I don't have to have monthly blood tests; I've been pretty much left to get on with the PCOS for the last 15 years since I was diagnosed! emlsnre I need to take them all every day; the Glucophage is a special slow release version of Metformin. Once again, thank you all for your advice. I am sure I will have an abundance of other questions once I move out on the 20th.

Wow, we are taking 2 the same medications, I am on a different pill. The Glucophage - you can buy over the counter. It is not expensive - from what I remember. The Spironolactone - I have no idea if you can get this Dubai - I did post a thread asking about this drug but no one replied. So I am also hoping this is an over the counter drug. Only down side with it is, the monthly blood tests :(

Hi LM, definitely check before coming that your contraceptive pill is stocked here - that's not a name I recognise. I couldn't get mine out here when I arrived either and there was no equivalent available either. A call to a pharmacy would be able to telll you if what you need is available anywhere in Dubai - the pharmacists here are really nice and usually speak good English. Try the Arabella Pharmacy, which is based at the Spinneys on Al Wasl Road, and ask to speak to the pharmacist. I've found them very helpful in the past. Tel: 00971 4 3941519.

Hi, would definitely get registered with a GP here if you are taking regular meds. Is it Metformin you are needing on a regular basis? As for the other, maybe one of us could stick our heads in a pharmacy and see if it is on the shelf. Then at least you will know. If i get a chance I will have a look for you today.

I wouldn't advise just to go and buy medicine yes you can get across the counter but I would get a different doctors opinion and see what's avalible here rather than just popping to the pharmacy first of all. They will not ask for marriage certificate for obtaining the pill.

You might want to ask your GP for a list of alternative contraceptive pills which will work for you, the reason being that the choice here seems quite limited and certain brands are out of stock (Dubai-wide) sometimes. I'm still waiting for microgynon to come back after several years without! If your brand is available here, you can buy it without a prescription.

Are you married? Not sure about obtaining the pill if you are not. Contraceptives are available for anyone to buy across the counter in any pharmacy, you don't have to take along your marriage certificate. Everyone's health insurance's are different, I know mine covers repeat prescriptions and I am sure most will too. We have many GP's here too, you don't need to go to a specialist for every ailment. Good luck with your move! edited by Cornish Pixie on 08/08/2011

You'll have to make an appointment at the hospital to see a doctor who works in that area, then u can show the doc what u were prescribed before and he or her will tell you if it's available. You don't really get repeat prescriptions out here. I normally phone up the hospital I use to get a new prescription if the doc will prescribe again without seeing you. On most insurances it doesn't include contraceptives so you may have to pay for it yourself. It's straight forward getting an appointment out here with any specialists/doctors.
