I took the Pajero to be serviced this morning and just got a phone call from the dealership saying that the brake pads need to be replaced and wanted me to authorize a 750 AED charge for labor.

I said I'd have to check with DH first (just to buy some time). I've never felt any braking problems while driving the car, it's always been smooth and just fine. I'm aware that brake pads do wear out eventually, but I've heard stories of dealerships pulling the wool over people's eyes to make an extra buck, especially out here.

The car is only two and a half years old with about 50,000 AED on the clock. Is it reasonable that the brake pads are wearing out by now? DH just took off for a business trip in Singapore so I can't check in with him at the moment. I'm also surprised that they asked for the labor costs authorization given that the car is still under warranty, surely all this changes including labor should be covered by the warranty?

Thanks for the advice, ladies. I called the garage and told them to go ahead. 750 AED isn't much money and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Update: the dealership said the brake pads are a consumable and therefore not covered by the warranty. Does this make sense? Yes, consumables like wipers, tyres, oil, filters etc....they wear out because the vehicle is used by the owner and the garage is not responsible for that kind of wear expected by normal use (ie driving)...warranty covers things not expected to break during normal use for a set defined time period.

it sounds about right. Better to be a little out of pocket until you feel it. You can check them yourself. http://autorepair.about.com/od/regularmaintenance/qt/brake_inspect.htm

you have done well to get 50000km out of a set of pads (just over 31000miles)! Especially here where your car (assuming its Auto) would be riden on the brakes a lot of the time (i.e in traffic, slowing for lots of bumps etc etc) manual you wouldnt really crawl on the brakes and it all adds up to wear.... thats not taking into account the agressiveness of your driving (if you are aggressive).... i dont have a mitsi but then brake pads are not usually a car manufacturer brand, but i got 40000 out of my pads my 4x4..... you dont want to be waiting till you have no pad before changing them....that results in scratching your discs and thats a whole new expense you dont want to go into!!! The other thing is, do Mitsubishi check and replace pads normally on a 50k service...if thats the case then they are going to tell you they need replacing anyway....but i reckon 50K is good going.... Labour 130quid is probably what you would expect for an authorised dealer here.... edited by Blueskies on 20/03/2011

Yes it does. I think I'd had pads and discs changed around 50k.
