Just one thing to add as many of my friends don't realise it - it is a very long way from Sydney to Brisbane! It takes 13 hours to drive in one stretch... obviously as you are breaking it up it will be easier, but just wanted to make sure you are aware of the distance...

As everyone else has said you will be totally fine! If you can make it up the sunshine coast/noosa way too you will love it! An hour to an hour and a half north of Brisbane. Its amazing. :) Enjoy your trip. ohh heard about the sunshine coast from my doctor @London clinic. Think we will try and arrange an overnight stay there. Thanks for the heads up

No worries-you will be safe-Aussies enjoy meeting visitors-and we have loads of African students studying here so you won't be a novelty-if that makes sense-have a great trip

I'm kiwi, not aussie but I've done that drive and it was amazing. All the places we stopped were really lovely, chilled and relaxed. I didn't get any small town redneck vibe from anywhere on the journey.

You will be fine :) I wouldn't expect you to encounter any difficulty- Australians by and large are used to visitors from all around the world, many have travelled extensively themselves and as a tourist you will be predominantly in areas frequented by overseas guests. Have fun planning the trip. Hunter valley is lovely as is Byron Bay. The Tweed Coast (kingscliff etc) is also beautiful.

Oh my oggdness, yes it would be safe for you. Don't get me wrong, Australia has it fair share of racist bigoted rednecks but I can't see you encountering any problems driving along the coastline there, regardless of how small and insular the town is that you chose to stop in along the way. May I ask you a sensitive question in return? What do you class as 'black'? Are of African decent?

Really hoping you guys can help me. We are going to Australia for summer holidays next month and I'm keen to do the Sydney to Brisbane drive cos want to stop at Byron Bays , Hunters Valley etc. My DH is not too keen as he is scared of the racist attacks (cos of media reports) if we travel through small towns and thinks we should just fly. My question is it safe for black people to travel on our own. This is a genuine question and would appreciate honest views. TIA
