Hi ladies,

I am hoping to move to the UAE in the future. 3-5 Years time. I want to work up my CV & Experience before seriously applying for jobs over there. I'm wondering, is the clerical/admin/reception vocations good paying? I'm from Belfast, so I have UK qualifications and speak English well, but do not know Arabic or any other second language.

Any advice will be welcome!

PhantomSeriously if you can it might be worth trying to get some experience in the legal sector or even trying to get some sort of qualification as a legal secretary, from my experience these tend to be the better paid roles in this line of work. Your best course of action might also be to look for a firm who have offices both in Belfast and in Dubai - you could somehow manuvore a transfer when the time came which would always be a good idea as theres a small chance they might pay your relocation, I'm not sure for this level of work though, the days of huge expat packages with relocation seem to be a distant dream for most

If you are looking at moving here in 3-5 years time i wouldn't even bother asking that question now Alot of things can change in that timeframe and it is far to soon to be asking. Not all good roles require degrees and Western candidates are still highly sought and paid well It is depends on the company, the role, being here at the right time Alot of roles are secured by knowing the right people, some reception and admin roles are well paid however they are far and few between.

I had a Receptionist job for a year at at Large British corporation. The pay was 11,000 aed. I left in the end to go back to pa work as pays more but looking back I think 11,000 was ok for reception role. There are companies who want a native English person on their reception and they pay accordingly. I don't have a degree. It's hard to get that first job but once you have some UAE experience on your cv its easier to get interviews. Catch 22!

With emiratization on full swing, a HR position will be difficult to secure without big qualifications and massive experience. Receptionist and PA work: you will be in direct competition with Philippinas and Indians who have equal if not better qualifications (uni BA and master) and willing to work for a third of what you would expect. You will need to be able to offer "something extra" to secure a position here in this field at the salary package you would require. You need to work on your skills, especially language skills (these girls are usually at least bilingual) and make yourself unique. Good luck!

To be honest majority of the good paying roles need degrees. If I was you I would try and get a PA role to get experience in that field. That should also give you plenty of admin experience at the same time. The only other field I can think of is HR, but I'm sure there are others on here who can give more advice.

I see. Well I know I won't be over there for a few years as I said. So I want to see if I can get experience in other vocations. Do you know of other vocations within easy reach in the UK that are good paying over in the UAE that I could apply for when ready?

Majority of the reception jobs I looked as were paying less than 5k a month, even some of the PA roles pay less than 10k and they want you available 24/7 at times! It's worth registering with as many agencies as you can and see what they have to offer as well as looking on here and the local job websites.

PS, you'll be up against some seriously qualified candidates from South Asia and the Philippines. That's why the pay is so low here for those positions. For decent pay, you'd need to be looking at executive secretary/assistant jobs, which need a few years experience. The international schools here hire now and again, but again the salary will be a shock to you! HTH
