we had roll out grass done, in this heat. in the beginning DH watered at 5am and 8pm. then one weekend he put "lawn food" on - you can buy it at ace - and the grass has been growing like crazy. my DH now only waters at night and our grass is thick, has spread and looks lovely - even though its summer. good luck & have fun doing the garden up!

I would price up all options and take the cheapest, why spend money on a rental property. I see what you're saying, but its not really a rental property. We'll be in this property for the next 4-5yrs... the cheapest option would be easy to go for but we just need it perfect and fully grown by end of October, so thats pretty much the deciding factor - will the plugged grass be fully grown by then or not? If so, it would be a no brainer. ;)

We had the roll out grass planted in tufts as well. And that is what I would choose again if I needed it. It needs good manure in the beginning, and water, but not too much. After 2 months it is thick and pretty. We had ours planted in October. Don't know how it will stand the heat if it is planted now, but better than the rolled out I think.

I disagree where ever we have lived we have had tufts of grass. Some gardeners do know what they are talking about. The grass gets more established better grows better and looks better. You need to water 3 times a day i mean alot of watering anf fertilize with cow manure etc. In the long run the tuft grass will last longer. Our friend had roll out grass because they couldnt be bothered to wait and they has alot of the grass dying etc because it wasnt rooting into the soil. Also its cheaper to do it this way. About2 months it should be all covered if looked after properly.

Hmmm exactly what I thought. Maybe the reason he is pushing for the plugged grass is that they may not have a heavy roller? Will talk to hubby because we need the grass thick and perfect for end of October. Thanks for your advice ;)

The tufts of grass is actually more for shaded areas. It will never look as good a a turf laid lawn.

we've had both laid. If you get the roll out lawn, make sure they use a heavy roller on it immed after to get it level. Looks much nicer than the plugs but you do need to water, water , water day n night especially in summer! Plugs will take a good few months to look good.

Dont do the patches of grass Shelly, those guys don’t know what they’re talking about. Turf is much better and as you say it will transform the garden straight away. I would probably wait until the weather is a bit cooler as the grass will need a lot of watering at first.

Hi there, it could take ages to get a reply on the gardening forum and since EW is down this weekend I need some answers/advice today. ;) We are starting our garden from scratch. With the grass we wanted to purchase the grass that rolls out so it is instantly nice and thick. The landscaping guy told us to stay clear of that grass and instead do the patches of grass. He said it grows quickly and in no time will have all grown/joined together and that it actually tends to be better quality in the long run than the rolled out grass. Does this sound right? If you had the grass planted in patches, how long did it take for your lawn to be perfect? If we were to have it planted within the next couple of weeks, do you think it would be nice and thick by late October? Thanks!
