Have been to re-licence our car and were hit with 300 dhs for Salik fines dating back to 2009! I'm not just saying this as an excuse but I know for sure that we have never been late paying the Salik fee but when I look at our account there are around 30 'violations' over a three month period at really odd times and days of the week when the car was in Abu Dhabi. I know you can argue it but I'm not sure I want the stress and how are you supposed to actually prove anything? Not only have we been hit but a friend got over 1,000 fines dating back to 2007, he was furious and says he can't understand it either. Have to say when they are fining you so far back how the h*ll are you supposed to remember. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

i re-registered my car back in october and knew i had salik fines on from a few years ago, but in auh they were not interested, you would only have to pay them off if you sold the car etc... but now as of last year, you do have to pay off any fines..... so the answer was before last year it didnt matter but now it does and on the yearly rego then you have to pay up. always check with any fines the piccie to make sure its your car, there are many cars with same numbers as in the case of the old ad number plates but with different colours, and in dxb they can get the first letter wrong etc. you can check online.

We've just faced a similar situation where my husband took my car to re-register and discovered that we had salik fines of AED 4,010/- for going through gates "without a tag" in my previous car. We certainly DID have a tag and topped it up regularly based on the sms’s Salik sends. So: * I sold the car in Feb 2011 * cancelled the salik tag in Feb 2011 * bought another car in Mar 2011 * bought a new tag in Mar 2011 and all that while no one told me that there were pending payments/fines. The guy at the desk says that it was in June 2011 that the system updated the fact that the salik tag was in my husband’s name and the car was in mine hence they 'deactivated' the tag (of course without informing us) from mid-Jan till we sold the car. Literally a year later we discover these fines! My question is, if they deactivated it then how was I still topping it up and also receiving messages that the credit was low etc etc. Also, if they had deactivated it then how did I cancel it when I sold the car?? I'm sooo very upset (stressed out) about this as we have lived sooo carefully in Dubai, respecting the culture and abiding by the law yet due to the relatively "young systems" we have to pay very hefty fines. Is there anyone else who has had similar experiences and has any further advice to give? I am surely going to send a dispute form but I'm not sure how productive it would be now that we have paid the fines just to be able to get the car released. Similarly, it is a very scary situation because till we took the car for re-registration we were completely unaware of this. What if this went on record and we were stopped at passport control? Where is the assurance that they will not come up with other "fine/s" months from now..? What if we had relocated back to the UK?

Roysie, exactly what I thought, how can they back date especially to 2007 in the case of our friend. They seem to make it up as they go along. I will definitely be scrutinizing the photos, thanks for that! Still not sure I want to go through the claim process though, I prefer the quiet life, I've had enough of stress:( Its not stressful to fill in an online form. Just annoying that it takes them forever to process it. I have had friends who had theirs processed in 3 weeks. I think it depends on the amount.

If you register on the Salik website you can check your violations. Each violation has a photo of the car. That is how we found out Salik made a mistake by charging us for a car with an F numberplate whereas our numberplate starts with C. Numbers were same though. I filled in the online dispute form. We got dhs2200 back....but it took 2 years!

I was under the impression that when you re-register once a year it can't be completed until all fines and fees are paid... so how can there be any fines pre-march 2011?? Surely when you went to re-register last year and the year before these should of shown up????
