Ok so what's the deal with being sick? My new houseboy has a cold virus that we all have, its pretty horrid with a sore throat, congestion ect... I told him he can do half a day and he asked for 100dhs for medicine from the Pharmacy... I told him he has to come in tomorrow and then its Friday so he can take rest and Saturday is only a half day for him anyway. What do you do? I don't get any time off when I'm sick, being a mum of 2 small children I have to solider on like the rest of us, so I don't want him thinking he can just take sick days willy nilly? Equally do you give extra money for medicine or should it come out of his salary?

My previous Hb only had maybe 2 sick days the entire 11 years he worked for us?... so I'm a bit unclear as what to do...

Our maid can take cold and flu tablets etc from our medicine box if needed. If she were sick enough to need a doctor (not happened yet) I'd take her to our local clinic and I'd pay, including any prescription fees. When she has been obviously unwell, I've given her the day off. Apart from the fact I wouldn't feel right making her work when sick, I'd rather she weren't coughing and sneezing around my kids. I also think that if you are unwell then resting up means you will be feeling better, and back on form quicker. So far illness hasn't really been an issue as she is rarely sick. However, if someone working for me was taking to their bed at the first sign of a sniffle, I'd be having words. I don't think you can compare being a mum and not getting a day off to sick days for staff. In the same way that being a mum is an unpaid job yet I assume you pay your houseboy? Also, I think you were just really lucky with your previous hb, most people, regardless of job would take more than 2 sick days in 11 years.

legally for a housemaid you are meant to provide medicine if needed, if a houseboy contract is the same then go by that? I wouldnt give money, I would buy the meds and give them. Our last maid helped herself to panadol etc in the first aid box and anything prescribed by a doctor I bought her and paid for. (Happened twice in a year). If a doctor hadnt prescribed somerhing I would probably be reluctant to buy it for him/her unless its something I would usually use myself. Most the "usual stuff" though is in our medicine box so available to the maid. edit to add, my maid was so useless when sick, think manflu but 100 times worse ,holding walls, pretending to almost faint etc (for a common cold) so I used to send her to her room. Lo and behold 2 hours later shes fit as a fiddle and going to a friends house (Lo and behold me deducting a days salary!) edited by Purple on 12/10/2011

If my maid is sick, she stays home. Not because I'm particularly kind hearted, I just don't want her to give it to the kids. Unfortunately for her, it's usually my kids who give it to her. She always pays for her own medicine or takes from our stash, but I would pay if she mentioned it. I would give him the money, but ask for a receipt.

A rotten cold can make us feel so miserable, but I suppose it depends how severe his illness is, flu for example, no one can even lift an eye lid. Go with you instincts!!!! Just because you have to plod on with the kids, doesn't mean to say everyone else has too. As for medicines, maybe he should buy them with his own money!!!! or you do and take it from his salary.

If my housemaid has a minor illness, I expect her to work like everyone else does. Like you, I don't rest when I'm sick. I do give my housemaid medicine if she is sick, though, but I buy it myself. However, if it's just a cold, nothing is required except some Panadol Cold & Flu at night ONLY and possibly some nasal spray. 100 dirhams is way too much for cold medicine. It is written in the housemaid's contract that the sponsor is to pay for medicine. I don't know if a houseboy's contract is different. edited by AnonDubai on 12/10/2011
