Thanks for all the great advice ladies! Will remember passports but one question - husband and I have residence visas and my parents are on British passports- no Oman visas required to go to Hatta or Al Ain or Khor Fakken, correct? And if we wanted to .explore Oman a bit (probably another time) ? TIA :-)

If you go to Hatta remember to take your passports. There are quite a few checkpoints now as you pass through a small tip op Oman on the way there.

Khor Fakkan. Pack a picnic and head for the east coast through the mountains. Quite a trip, and stop off at the friday market on the way. Thanks, I just googled some images and Khor Fakkan looks beautiful! How long to drive there? Could we do it in a day or should we overnight there? Definitely do-able in a long day. There is a nice hotel (the oceanic) when you first hit the coast if you come in from the Masafi route (sometimes you get to see the waterfall at Masafi) pretty much just below the rulers palace which is high on the mountainside. This is good if you are in need of a very welcoming air-conditioned lobby, clean toilets and restaurant. Or an overnight stay. If you head out of Dubai, you can avoid Sharjah and the traffic, and head for the Dhaid Road. If you want to extend the trip there is always the Sharjah wildlife park and natural history museum to call into on the way. Take the by-pass road or the truck road behind the scout camp and join Sharjah airport road well after the city.

We did a trip to Al Ain with my parents and our toddler which was fun. We drove to Jebel Hafeet, had lunch at the hotel at the top with stunning views (can't remember hotel name) and then can do Al Ain Wildlife Park which is fantastic for the kids - (could easily spend the day at the wildlife park). I know there is probably more to do in Al Ain but that's all we've managed so far. Took us about 1.5hrs to drive there? The Wildlife Park is 15dhs entry for adults and I think 5dhs for children - if you really wanted to just make a day of it there then would suggest packing a picnic as lots of areas you can sit and eat/play, we weren't overly impressed by the dining facilities (ok for coffees but lunch was limited unless we missed somewhere fab). http://www.awpr.ae/en/Pages/Home.aspx And for things of interest in Dubai itself, our parents enjoyed the Big Bus Tour as a good overview of the city, the old town route in particular; Bastikiya, Heritage Village and Creek are lovely to wander round edited by SL13 on 04/04/2011

If you do the Hatta trip make sure you all have your passports with you as there's a checkpoint near to the hotel - sometimes they ask for passports, sometimes they don't... Enjoy yourselves, wherever you go!

Another lovely trip to do with visitors is to Ras Al Khaimah. We leave Dubai around 10 in the morning and reach RAK around 11:30. Then we drive outside the actual city looking at the Sheeba palace, Umm Nar tombs and Falayah fort. We lunch at the Hilton. And then spend some time at their beach. Then we go to Al Maarid before heading to the RAK National museum which is small but has very interesting information about the RAK Sheikh and his tribe. And then we visit the souq and round off the day by going to corniche for coffee, sweets and shisha before heading back home :) I always suggest that people look at this site before planning a trip to RAK [url=http://www.rakpedia.com/home.html'>link[/url'> edited by em2san on 03/04/2011

Thanks! Sounds fun Wuffles, I'm getting excited :) Re Hatta - How long is the drive and how is best to plan the day? If we leave early is there somewhere nice to have lunch before wandering around then returning home? I'm sure I can search all this but am just being lazy. Any quick suggestions appreciated :) Not sure about Hatta-we took the bus to Al Ain and Abu Dhabi so can't really help there either-I am sure our driver overtook everything on the road the last time we went!

Hi ladies, My folks are coming to visit next week and I myself am still new to Dubai so haven't explored much yet. I know they are going to get bored with the malls pretty quickly. Any suggestions of day trips we can take to see something of UAE life outside the city? A weekend ot Oman or Hatta was a thought but I believe due to the political troubles some are suggesting to stay out of Oman... nto sure if that advice has any grounds though. TIA I have two toddlers so need to bear that in mind too when planning my days! edited by mk-in-dubai on 03/04/2011
