Suggestions for short hol in the snow over Xmas

We want to take our children to somewhere snowy over the Christmas break. Just for 5 - 7 days so a short break and not too expensive. We don't need ski fields as none of us are skiers. They just want to have snowball fights, make snow angels and snow men, ride sleds - that kind of thing.

Where would you recommend as somewhere that is pretty much guaranteed to have snow over the school break? Ideally it would have a few other things to do/see when we are not outside frolicking and freezing our butts off.
Thanks

We've just booked to go to Prague for the Christmas markets. If you don't mind flying out of AD airport, prices on Ethiad are about half of those to anywhere else we checked in Europe (Copenhagen, Munich, Geneva...). edited by Catawba KSE on 25/09/2011

Thanks for that. I was wondering how we were going to cope with snow gear. The kids have some jackets, but may very well have grown out of them by Christmas. DH and I didn't bring anything like that here. Certainly helps keep the price down if you don't have to buy stuff like that for just one wear...

Some more details - as you arrive at the airport there, they walk you through a large warehouse where you get snow suits and boots and then on to the bus to the hotel. So, you don't have to buy/take snow gear - just normal winter boots and coat for arrival and departure. As we are not from a cold country, I was worried that we would all freeze to death but DH found thermal underwear (!) for all of us at, would you believe, M&S in Dubai mall?

Just double checked, and it was with Monarch that we arranged a package with: http://www.monarch.co.uk/holidays/lapland Everything is organised and included- all meals too- though we bought some extra time on the dog sled (my husband drove!). We did 3 or 4 nights and we'd all go again in a flash.

Thanks MLI, will add that to the list of research. I've never heard of the Icehotel. Sounds amazing!

Stockholm or the north of Sweden!!! A lovely place is Kiruna, (in Lappland, like someone else mentioned before) why not visit the Icehotel, a BEAUTIFUL experience, with snow guarantee! And lots of things to do. Or why not Copenhagen, Emirates have a direct flight :-) edited by MLI on 23/09/2011

I would love to go to Prague! I've heard it's a beautiful city. But that Lapland Hol sounds really novel. Bit out of left field, but my kids would love that!!! Hmmm, a few interesting destinations to investigate now, thanks very much. Desertdoc, do you remember where you stayed exactly? Did you have to supply your own food in the log cabin and rent your own car?

My kids had never seen snow apart from the fake stuff at MOE so took them to Lapland a couple of Christmases ago. We all loved it and yes - LOTS of snow! Had a log cabin, made out own fires (though they did have central heating) and rode on a dog sled, saw free-range reindeer and father christmas. Our local travel agent was trying to take us to Finnish Lapland from here via Finnair, but we did it cheaper through Gatwick using a Thomson package that I bought on line. My kids talk about that trip all the time.

Europe, look at Austria or old Eastern block countries for good deals, not that far away and far better. I agree with Lady F. Prague (fly direct) or Bulgaria (fly qatar or turkish) - guaranteed snow!

Park City Utah! seriously goregous, and only about 20 minuets from Salt Lake City (yes I am plugging my home state lol) but seriously, best snow on earth! There's a lot to do, they even have the alpine slide thing from the 2002 Winter Olympics and you can go down.

Is snow absolutely guaranteed in both of those places? Turkey would be cool. Don't know much about Lebanon, will have to investigate.
