Hi All,

We are looking into a holiday to Tanzania/ Zanzibar and would like to know if any of you who have gone there with a small kid - if we need vaccines - and which one?

Also any recommendation as to where to stay ... and what to do (besides the beach and pool?)

I think you would definitely need malaria prophylaxis (Malarone Junior can be taken from a young age) and you may want to vaccinate for Hep A and typhoid if not already done. I believe that yellow fever vaccine is no longer required. Also, for Zanzibar, check electricity situation as when we were there they were having serious electricity supply issues so there was only AC in our hotel room at certain (short) times of day and it was beastly hot and humid... Also no electricity at the airport so no xray machines, no metal detectors, no AC... it was not very reassuring. Arrival of incoming flight was announced by little boys who had been sent out on the runway to spot the plane in the distance!

I lived in Tanzania for 2 years and regularly went over to Zanzibar as well....Crime is a problem, more so on the mainland with theft and mugging the most common (especially on Westerners) and yes, unfortunately there have been some more serious incidents on Zanzibar. I don't mean to scare you off and for most people it's as safe as anywhere. I personally wouldn't go with a small child - apart from beaches and safari there isn't a great deal to do. yes, both are great but I'm thinking that a small child is too young to appreciate a safari and would probably get very bored sitting in a dusty car for hours. Zanzibar is a beautiful place to visit, the people, on the whole are friendly and welcoming, the beaches are gorgeous, Stone Town is a great place to wander around ...... just not with kids.

They talked on the radio recently that there had been a few incidents recently with tourists being attacked in Zanzibar, therefore the prices are quite low at the moment. It was on the travel show. Someone from Dubai had been attacked by a gang with machetes. Check with a pediatrician as well if they think it's safe to bring a small child there, as there is malaria in the area. Thank you for this. Will dig more info.
