Tax bill!

Myself & hubbie (from UK) have been in the UAE for 17 years. We are now being asked to complete tax forms - i am not working at the moment and although we have 2 rental properties in the UK, the rental income just covers the mortgages, yet we are being presented with tax bills! Does anyone use a tax advisor here in Dubai you can recommend and what are approx costs? Just want to pass over the paperwork to someone else and know it is being completed correctly. Cheers.

If you are renting out your properties and are receiving an income, but are living abroad you should have completed a HMRC form so that you avoid having to pay tax, can you remember if you ever completed anything like this? If your rentals are run through an agency they should have the form, or you can find it on the HMRC website.

I agree with redleaf - don't waste money paying someone to do it for you, as it's very easy on line. I have one property I rent out, and it's really worth completing your tax return online every year, as I almost always get a rebate, and have never ended up owing any tax.

Hi Don't panic! We also have 2 rental properties in the UK and once we list all the deductables, we run at a loss so haven't had to pay tax. It is very easy to do online. You just need to register on the HMRC website first. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/index.htm Honestly not worth paying a tax consultant - as the online system is very user friendly. If I can do it, anyone can! Good luck!

If you want a good UK based tax advisor I can recommend someone. He specilises in tax planning for non-domiciled expats.

I'm presuming they only want last year's figures - if that's the case it should be relatively easy if you've got all the income and expenditure to hand. I did ours for last year - we have one property which is rented out through an agency. I've got copies of all the monthly invoices for everything as they're emailed to me and just split it all down the middle for DH and me and ended up with a silly 31p tax refund! ETA: we also did it online. If you want to post your email address I'll go through what we did in more detail, but please note I'm not a finance bod - it'd just be what we did/used!! Hope that helps a little bit. edited by october on 12/10/2011
