What's the best place for getting my car windows tinted?
Has anyone used 3M? I think they're in car parks of most malls.... seems quite convenient to go there while shopping!

Thanks.

Ladies - the legal limit is 35% tint and I would suggest not going above this because you then have problems with night time driving i.e. it becomes difficult to see out of the windows in the dark..... Marina mall costs ~900 dirham I think got it done not too long ago and you get 5 year guarantee with it where did you get 35 from when everyone else says 30 ?? maybe its like the speed limit (there is a small tolerance over) lol.

Thank you ladies!! You all have been very helpful. And I'll stick to the 30% tint (or VLT)! Thanks.

we had a big black MPV (so loads of windows) car and it was like 10 years ago bought when we couldnt tint the windows, but had babies in the car, and the metal bits of the seat belts were really hot in the summer, but they brought in the rules that you could tint 30% we went with the very expensive vkool as that was the best, and it made a big big difference. i dont think there is a need to have more % as then it makes it dangerous seeing out especially in the night time, u dont wear your sunglasses at nightime do you. if its a big 4x4 then the ac should be good enough not to need all that black windows as well. it again its the usual thing here if you dont ask you wont get but obviously some people are more likely to get it if asked by the right person....

hehe well I have no clue is as straight as I can get. He wouldn't have got it because he was female or had kids though. I asked him and he said oh I just wanted it, so Omar took care of it for me. The permission letter is in Arabic and apparently has to be kept in the car with the insurance papers

Honestly, I have no clue. My husband is a bit, err no a LOT pedantic about his car. Its new and black and ****** hot inside it. He has been waiting for this permission for months, I haven't asked him any questions about it other than to tease him about it :) I will see what I can find out.

I don't even know what % my husband applied for, but we are 100% expat. Permission arrived in the past week because we were in Germany and the PRO sent him a text message to say it had arrived. Do you have to give a reason? If so what kind of reason?

i was talking to vkool the other week and they have said that you are still only allowed 30% they will now not do your front windscreen whereas before they would do it with clear tint, but now you cannot because of the cameras i suppose, they want to look at you now. of course some people get a higher tint and wait until they are stopped by a policeman with his special machine.... when and if that happens

when they brought the law in many moons ago it was for expats only at 30% no expat was allowed more, the special permissions were for perhaps how do i say it certain cars...... such as landcruisers, patrol, fjcruisers etc, but of course you must have a white car, so i sadly cannot apply lol

The only special catagory you need to be is to be someone who applies, and is patient. I'm sure that's not the case if you're a random expat and apply for a 50%!

It's actually 30% for everyone, not just expats. But certain people are allowed a darker tint, but they have to get special permission for it. yes thats right, so its not 30% for all, as you, if you fall into that catergory can get special permission for more, but the reflective tints are not allowed full stop, but does that stop people, nope! I hate those reflective tints - you kight as well look straight at the sun!

Hey...you can check with the 3M authorized distributor called Apex Gulf Enterprises (AGE). They have more competitive rates than the other branches. If you're ok with other brands...there's a pretty good brand called Madico...my friend's just purchased it...there's a deal running for it on www.dealgobbler.com...not sure if it's still on...but you get a AED 300 odd discount on the car tint value...and the product's supposed to be an award winning patented product. Anyway...she's going to be taking her car to Solar Shield Emirates (that's the showroom where the vouchers valid) at Oasis Mall this weekend...will let you guys know how it worked out! edited by sam.jane31 on 30/05/2011

This is copied from Dubai Forum.....a while ago.... We are the Authorized 3M dealers for window tint and auto detailing in Sharjah - UAE. In regards to your question on whether the legal limit is 30% VLT (Visual Light Transmission) or coverage, the limit, as is always the case, is based on VLT. However, there is a common misunderstanding in the UAE that the higher the percentage the darker the tint. Although we have been trying to create awareness, it has proved to be quite difficult as most tint shops (including the better ones) use a flawed explanation in their customer presentations. As tint shops are aware of the 30% VLT legal limit, the "30%" that they install for customers is indeed 30% VLT. However, to aid customers existing understanding they tend to play along with the notion that the higher the percentage the darker the tint. What they state as being 40% - 50% is actually 20% VLT, and what they state as 70% - 80% is generally 5% VLT (both illegal). As you can tell, there is no real relation between the percentages that they state and the actual darkness of the film according to the technically correct measure of VLT, i.e the numbers they state are completely random and innacurate. My advise to UAE based customer would be to request your tint salesman to state the percentage in VLT and not just any random numbers as this is the only way to truly guage whether your tint is legal. Once you know the VLT, ensure that number is ABOVE 30% on the side and rear, and ABOVE 70% on the front windsield.

@ashef.....I just read in the 7days...according to Khaled (a letter writer) he says:- And about window tints, people do have a licence for 100 per cent tints and the front window. I doubt you knew if that person does or doesn't have that privileage so don't worry about the tints, the police are the ones to judge that.... hehehehe......for what is the licence I wonder?
