MoT, most people don't know about it when they first arrive, unless there happens to be a helpful thread about it on EW. As I mentioned on an earlier thread, my husband told his company that the ID cards were compulsory because I learnt about them from EW - if I hadn't read about it here, we would still be ID card-less and maybe heading for trouble, as we rarely read the local newspapers.
Thank you! It would be unlikely for me to even assume there was even such a thing as a mandatory card for expats.....
nice little earner... but still, the deadline, last I heard, not that it doesn't change every few months, is in 2013.
We're moving out of Dubai in about 9 months, so there's no way I'm going through it unless I really, really can't help it. I bet they don't destroy their records appropriately (if at all) after the visa/ ID has been cancelled. Data protection in Dubai is a joke, so all the more reason to be sceptical about handing over your fingerprints.
you can honestly function absolutely fine without one...i have done for three years.my driving licence isn't up for renewal for another 7 years... yes they say it will all be linked to bank accounts etc etc - let's see! it's a money making scheme...
My head was in the snow then ( I just moved here)....
if you have just moved here thats different but there is no excuse for long timers who still havent done anything about it.

This was posted a few days ago. I think it's quite common knowledge now that everyone needs them, they've only been advertising that detail for three or so years now in every paper.
yeh people must have their head in sand if they havent heard about it. lol
Everything is in my dh name it's pointless me having one I have a drivers licence here in my name and my visa and that's it ....what a waste of money for me... Get something that willnsit in my purse and never use :@
it doesnt matter, you will need one for everything eventually, yes children too. to get a renewal for your drivers licence you will no doubt need it for that too when that time comes. for children they firstly didnt need one but they were trying to ascertain how many people live in the emirates and they couldnt do that properly without issuing everyone an id number. if you go to any government hospital etc you will need show your id, to get a phone you will have to show it, once everyone has got one it will be so much easier with the red tape around here.
I didn't even know I needed one!
