Desiccated coconut would definately not work then! I find canola oil the best for crisping up roast veggies. You can buy it at the organic shop. Failing that sunflower oil works fine. Avoid olive oil unless you want soggy rather than crispy.

What are you using it for BM? If baking I use Pure margarine, it's vegan and I get it from Lulu. If you are looking to replace the shortening in Christmas fruit mince then desiccated coconut works.

She is huffing and puffing over her pampas grass (it might have died, she forgot to prune it) I heard that her gardener was fed up trimming it so he left... EWWWW she should not let him near her bush.

thanks all SM, why do you need shortening in pies. Now here's where we need DGIT/Mrs LL to ask us what our mothers taught us/why don't we know all this already. Where is the old trout anyway. :D

Vegetable shortening? Or any of the veg oils? When I made pies I would always use shortening in place of lard.
