Has anyone had it? I dont go in the sun here at all, in the 8 yrs Ive been here I think Ive spent 2 weeks sunbathing, I also cover up my skin and wear high sun factors and I have a major Vit D deficiency. Im having the Vit D injection tonight, and just want to "manage my expectations". TIA

After what happened to me as a result of the injection I think in hindsight I would have preferred tablets. Anyway what's done is done. I have been advised I still need to sit in the sun for 20mins daily with bare arms and no suntan cream, plus I go back in 4 months for blood test to check levels. I didn't realise this was such a topical and common issue! Hugs to all x

Have just checked my bottle. It is Vit D Forte 50,000. I receive a one year script of 12 tabs. Totally prefer this than a jab - but then I'm a chicken. I thought you were a blue cow! Ha ha :). Blue cow wonders.......

Sorry to learn that so in yur case it may be necessary. Best wishes to you Emma Are you able to get any sun to help instead of taking such high doses ? I have blood tests every three months to check my levels. Im happy to go with my doctors advise. Well I am also battling skin cancers, but I do not avoid the sun in normal day to day life, but I also do not lie in it.

The amounts quoted in that link would require enormous amounts of tablets over a LONG period of time. The 50,000 IU tablets are only available on prescription and only after blood tests from hospitals, normal pharmacies do not carry them.

A doctor told me you could safely take up to 18,000 IU daily. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_D#Overdose_by_ingestion It's only WIKI but the figure was established in Nov 2010, look at overdose section. That link says 50,000 per DAY! That is an insane amount.

This I understand at 50,000 level is generally only for short term until your levels improve and then one goes to lower levels daily or may be ok if sun is sufficient , but depends on the individual.

4000 IU per day for ages 9–71+ years is the reccommended maximum dose, otherwise you could have problems.

I take I Vit D supplement that I am prescribed back home. I take one tablet a month. According to my endo this kind of quality is not available here. When you head home perhaps it would be worth while discussing options with your GP.

These doe not always need to be taken by injection. tablet form is also available and specialists can perscribe and guide one. Neurobine, is B1, B6, B12 combined and can be taken at appropiate levels to increse your levels. Same with Vitamin D, specialists can advise you and when levels up one needs to reduce. 30 mins in the sun with face and arms exposed, walking will do it for Vit D once levels at normal. Vit D is one of the biggests issues facing the world .

Thanks ladies. Its unbelievable that whilst living in the sunshine, I can suffer from a major Vit D deficiency. Though I dont go out in the sun more than a few times a year, I cover up and wear high sun-factors, its apparently very common here. Had the injection, was very grateful that 2 injections were combined into one, but thats one huge needle they use. Im used to requesting the baby needles as I dont like the little buggers! Can only imagine what the B12 one is like. A bruised bum for a few days is worth getting us getting our health sorted.

I have the Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 injections every 2 months as I too have a malabsorption problem after having stomach surgery a few years ago. The Vitamin D injection does not cause pain but with the B12 injection there is some pain.

I have vitamin D injections annually. I have malabsorption issues and do not create enough. We also hide away from the sun a lot here as it is just too hot which doesn't help. I can't remember the name of the injection, but it is like an 'oil' consistency and is injected in the rump as an intramuscular injection. It doesn't hurt and for me at least has no side effects except a bit of a 'bruised' feel for a day or two. Vit D is Very important for calcium absorption. So it is worth also having a bone density test and have regular (every 2nd year or so) follow up scans. edited by famn on 20/03/2011
