Weavils or something else?

My breakfast cereals were alive on Sunday morning with miniscule bugs - like little black dots. They were even in my Lok'n'Lok tubs which had pancake mix in for the DDs so had managed to get in via the seals I presume.

They were lurking in the glued joints of unopened cereal boxes as well as in opened packets...

I've had weavils in the past in pasta/rice, but these little darlings are so tiny I'm not sure what they are.

Having ditched the crawling packets - birds had a field day y, and scrubbed out the cupboard, DD opened a new pack of cereal yesterday - and sealed it with one of those clippy things from Ikea.

I opened it this morning - and they don't seem to like porridge fortunately - to make my porridge, and they're there again.

So 1) what are they and 2) more importantly what's the best way to get rid of them - I'd already sprayed cleaner into the cupboard crevices on Sunday and left it to sit presuming that would drown the little critters, but that hasn't worked.

Any advice gratefully received. Will be sticking to boiled eggs for now for breakfast.

It's sooo common - I hate the blighters! They're big enough to see their legs, aren't they? AND they seem to appear out of nowhere. I now always decant any dry goods into clear, well-sealed pots and check before every use... saying that, typically, I haven't done it for my own muesli and was just finishing my morning's bowlful when I saw a little critter stuck in some yoghurt at the bottom! Hmmmm!

WdV don't you mean Georgina? OK so the creepy crawlies have been doing the naughty in my cupboards too. Oh joy!!! But why don't they like porridge oats? They weren't in that box!

Only joking October! You'll at least now be more vigilant and should be able to spot the critters more easily. ;)

Dally there's protein and protein imo - the odd bug fine I can accept that (almost :\: ) but these things were rife - the cereal in the sealed boxes was heaving with them - I defy anyone who isn't starving to eat the quantity there were, though I guess they'd have drowned in the milk by the time you put the spoon in your mouth. edited by october on 12/04/2011

Just a bit of protein with your cereal, no problem LOL more common than you think, I always inspect cereal on breakfast buffets in hotels very closely and often find they have this added protein! Edited to add I would always empty dried food out of the boxes and put them into sealable plastic boxes, jars etc like the ones from IKEA, I don't think the clips are sufficient, they'll easily find their way in through the tiniest of gaps. Mind you theses aren't as bad as when I live in NZ and found a cupboard crawling full of maggots, the culprit was a packet of suet, which I have learnt to my cost to now keep in the fridge, and I always transfer to a sealable plastic box. :\: edited by Dally on 12/04/2011
