I was under the understanding that nonmuslims living here would need a will that is compliant with sharia law. Meaning acceptable in sharia courts, but not dividing assest according to regular sharia tradition. I also understood a will written 'at home' would not be accepted here, it needs to be lodged here with someone. No expert obviously!
We have just had a quote which was 4750dhs for the two wills. We were also sent a big questionaire with the quote to fill in before we made an appointment.
Neither my husband nor i are muslim. We do not want a Sharia will, we want a NON sharia will, i.e. a will that means that our assets will NOT be divided between my husbands father and brother if my husband were to die (i would receive 8%), and my daughter will NOT be given to my father in law if we both were to die. As it stands, we all have to abide by Sharia law unless the relevant parties have agreed legally that they do not want this to happen.

Hi Helen,
Am I correct in assuming that you are non-Muslim?
If you nor your husband are Muslim, why would you consider a will according to Sharia?
Best wishes on your forthcoming happy occasion!
Hi,
Thanks for that guys. I don't mind spending the money of that is how much it costs, just seems a little steep. Been talking to friends and they reckon it's just an expensive thing to do. I feel better about it now though.
Thanks
Helen
DH and I had our wills drawn up here in 2009 and from memory think the cost was about 4,500 AED for the two. They were both straight forward. You could consider getting a quote from a reputable firm, which would give you something to compare with the quote you have had.
E.W. are having a legal evening on the 14th November and one of the topics will be Wills. May be worth going to it to have your questions answered. Details of the event are at the beginning of the forum page.
Oh ! Just noticed you say you are having your baby on the 14th. If you mean 14th November, possibly not the best night to be going out and about !
Hope all goes well for you.

We had ours done in our home country for a few hundred dollars each and were led to understand that this covers us here as well? I hope it does. Maybe someone has more info?
Hi
My husband and i are due to have our first baby on the 14th. We've been looking into wills due to shairah law etc and the quotes we've had back from the lawyer we asked seemed to be ridiculous. She quoted us about 11,000 dhs. 5 for the will, 3 for it being expat, 2 per person to sign to say they aren't going to pursue shairah law (my husbands father and brother). Is that just how much it costs? Has anyone had a will done here? Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks
Pooka
