well this might not be helpful at all maybe but I had the same problem and I just gave up until one fine day this happened.... I put my 2 yr old down for his nap and had run to get myself a much needed shower. at the end I was all happy and clean and was opening my door to go grab clothes and crawl in bed for a nap together with my bub but ya the moment I opened the door there was my son sitting down and waiting and ofcourse scaring the sh*t outta me haahah he on the other side was also scared as he got up and he was like ''Oh noo mommy what happened'' so I was even more in a shock and lost for words while I ran to grab a towel, than I got this stupid yet brilliant idea, I told him that it broke off because I was playing too much with it, and if he keeps on playing with it all the time than his will also fall of just like mommy's did hahaha well since than he hardly ever plays with it and is extra careful with it :D I know its wrong but what else could I do in such a situation hahaha

Reminds me of a joke about a mum who walked in on her young lad in the bath: Mother, "honey don't do that", Son, "it's mine and I'll wash it as fast as I like"... Seriously though, my DS is 8yrs old and not got his hands down is pants but always holding on to it, especially when standing in front of the tv playing on the Wii etc, it's just a boy thing and the more you draw attention to it the more it will become a problem. lolol yep !! child fiddling with it, me - do you need a wee ? child - no i just like holding my w!lly... LOL !!

LOL !! apologies to the OP for having a laugh but i would like to make just one serious point - as SK has said below... when you say you "try to make him understand this is not good"... actually it's a normal stage and as long as he's not whipping it out in Tesco/Spinneys (lol) it's not a problem..as Sue says, by all means encourage him to save it for private moments but beware of him thinking it's "bad" or "dirty"...the efffects of that could be far -reaching into later life...

Yes be sure that while asking him not to do that in front of people that you don't make it sound like it's wrong... I still clearly remember my mum giving me a telling off for same when I was about 4, it gave me a hang-up about bodily functions that lasted well into my teens.... not a good feeling when you're a girl going through the normal stuff that happens at that age! :( Friends had a boy about the age described who also did a similar thing.. .though what he did was announce loudly (in church) that his parents had had s!x last night (In a VERY loud voice) all the poor parents could do was to remind him that certain things are 'family business' and are not to be talked about in public but can be asked about at home. Of course we were all creased up laughing but trying not to show it so we didn't stop him from asking questions later on...

I think it's better to ignore the action you want to discourage. The more you tell him to stop the more he'll do it. Once he puts his hands in his pants ask him to do something else (help you in the kitchen,quote'> Do make sure he washes his hands first before helping :) Girls are the same btw and there is a great interest in nostrils too.

I said to my son when he was 2.5, as he lay on the couch watching tv with his hand down his pants " honey, I know it feels good to have hand on t o your pe nis and thats ok, but.....you need to do that in private rather than in the living room so, go into your bedroom and that is fine :)...also, picking your nose is good in private also lol.....anyway, it worked. I didnt make him feel bad about it but that some things are private. :) btw, dont make them feel there is something wrong with doing that becaue it is normal. Girls do it as well, is is pleasure, just not in public :)....it is the beginning of masterbation, very normal. <em>edited by SueB on 20/01/2012</em>
