I think one of the aviation medicine docs told me you would be exposed to more radiation by living in Aberdeen (lots of granite) than taking a handful of long haul flights. Cosmic radiation really isn't that much - this site suggests you avoid flying more than 200 hours during your pregnancy (and that is basically cautious; the same kind of cautious which grounds flight attendants once they announce their pregnancy but doesn't really fuss about their pre-announcement exposure) http://flyingduringpregnancy.com/flying-during-pregnancy-and-cosmic-radiation/

Thanks for posting this question, Mols. I've been meaning to ask others about it for a while. I flew long haul extensively during my first pregnancy as I flew a lot for work doing consultancy etc. My GP in the UK was only concerned because of some of the locations I was flying to not because of the flights themselves. He just told me to wear the approved travel socks and do as other posters have already suggested re water etc. Fortunately, I also flew business. However, now pregnant with number 3 and went to see Dr Sant here and she told me no flying until 2nd trimester! I was astounded, especially, as I'd been to Thailand and India the week before my appointment with her and took 6 flights within a week! She said similar to what Coffeegals Dr told her, except she said that one 7hour flight is the equivalent to one chest x-ray - wow, I've been exposed to a lot of radiation in my preganancies. So, what do flight attendants do? Are they put on other duties whilst pregnant? Would be interested to hear.

I've never to my knowledge been through an x-ray machine at an airport, where do they use them? Are the body scanners in the states x-ray?

Metal detectors are fine but TBH if pregnant I wouldn't risk to go through the x-ray machine. I've never been [i'>pushed[/i'> to use one either. They normally offer a physical "pat down" search as an alternative. Not sure about this option in all airports globally though. To my knowledge, x-ray machines are approved to be used by pregnant. But there is a discussion if these machines have been tested thoroughly enough and many are worried about what would happen if it malfunctioned. This is not easily detectable and is discovered in regularly scheduled maintenance checks. I've understood it would not be obvious to the operator, how much radiation is sent out with each shoot. If the machine is spreading more rays than it is designed to spread it's difficult to discover and not to be spotted by the "bare eye".

I agree with Kiwispiers, the metal detectors are fine to walk through. I did it every time I flew, it's only a metal detector and not an x-ray machine. I'm also not sure about some of the airports that offer that specialized full body scan however I do know that when I was home in Canada in June and I got "selected" for the full body scan I was also given two other options instead if I preferred.

no problems with flying, only downside is you can't take sleeping pills which is how I used to get through that flight. I flew to NZ and back at 9 weeks, (20 hours each way) flying economy (and lugging about 15kg of camera gear) so your 8 hour flight sound like a breeze. I did get a scan just before I left to make sure all was well. Do wear the pressure socks AND ideally also get up and move around as you do have a slightly increased risk of clots. Try and get an aisle seat. Keep your fluids up and look after yourself. The hardest thing I found was the food, I ordered a special meal but they "forgot" and ended up offering me prawn cocktails, soft cheeses and all sorts of things of the list of no-nos :(. I'd recommend taking a big bag of snacks. Also if you're feeling a bit nauseous it can be rough when the meals come out and the whole plane smells but all in all its unpleasant, but not risky.

I had to do quite a few business trips during my first trimester, the longest was 16 hours to LA. Just drink lots of water and put your feet up. I never had any problems with swelling or anything else. The only thing I wish I'd known was that Dr. Oz says flying for 30 hours exposes you to the same dose of radiation as one chest X-ray. Considering my one trip to LA and back was 30 hours, that's a lot of radiation! AND I did some other trips too.

thanks ladies - next question - would you sleep on the return if it was an overnight? If you wore the pressure socks? how often do you tihnk you need to get up and move... Yes. I took two flights to the USA and I don't think I got up once on either flight and that was in economy class. I am petrified to take my kids to the bathroom on airplanes because I find there is always more turbulence in that little enclosure. I just sit there in fear for most of the flight and require my husband to do bathroom duty.

thanks ladies - next question - would you sleep on the return if it was an overnight? If you wore the pressure socks? how often do you tihnk you need to get up and move... On our return flight I fell asleep before take off from JFK and woke up 1hr out of Dubai. I was absolutely wrecked and the sleep only did me good. Got off the plane feeling so refreshed and had no issues with swelling etc. HTH Edited to add, it was also an overnight flight. edited by shellly on 19/01/2012

I was a week away from a business trip around europe when i found out i was 7 weeks pregnant, a couple of long haul flights and lots of short ones . . . all in economy and it was completely fine. My doc told me to avoid caffeine and just drink lots of water and walk around every hour or two. Enjoy it and don't worry, it'll probably be the most relaxing flight you'll have for a while :)

Travelled to the Sates (West Coast) in my first trimester. Moved around a lot, drank plenty of water and also wore those travel sickness wrist bands, which, along with my anti nausea meds worked a treat. We were in Business too so I made sure every few hours I went to the galley to have a snack to keep my morning sickness under control. All went well. Coming home though.... was a hard slog. Red eye flight followed by long haul flight back to Dubai. Left an extremely horrible gift in JFK airport! :D Happy and safe travels!

Thanks AnonDubai - was the duphaston for the flight? It was to be taken for the duration of the trip as the doctor felt I needed support due to the fatigue from the long trip and jetlag. As I said, I did not use it as I personally don't believe in such things for myself.

hey Mols, we travelled to Italy when I was about 6 weeks. Stayed for 2 weeks and did a few short flights while we were there too. Was absolutely fine although the morning sickness kicked in while we were there! It helped having DH with me to handle all the luggage though. Am sure you will be fine, esp in Business!

I went to the USA and back in less than two weeks recently during my first trimester and my pregnancy has continued uneventfully. The doctor prescribed me Duphaston but I went AMA and did not fill the prescription.
