Thoughts? Curious how many use these Vitamin D supplements? Or any others?

Did not give vitamin D to neither of my kids. My oldest DD is almost 3 hrs old and not a good eater and we give her the Flinstones MultiVitamin (from the states) my other DD is almost 4 months and is exclusively BF and no vitamins.

I've used A+D vitamins for my DS and now using same for DD. For DS, we've switched to multivitamins when he became 1 y.o.

In the Netherlands, doctors advise parents to give Vitamin D till they are 4 yrs old and since we are not that much exposed to the sun here, I think it is advisory as well..

Vitamin D supplements should not be necessary for babies if either: - mum has optimum vitamin D levels and is breastfeeding, and baby gets sufficient sunlight (as kiwispiers describes), or - baby is drinking more than 500 ml/day of a vitamin-D fortified formula HOWEVER Vitamin D supplements (400 UI/day) are routinely recommended in the US (for example) for all breastfed infants, as it is very important for the body, and large numbers of mums and babies have been found to be vitamin-D deficient, usually due to them not getting enough sunlight which is the best way for our bodies to get vitamin D. If a breastfeeding mum stays out of the sun, and/or covers up (e.g. wears hijab and modest clothing, or covers to protect herself from the sun), then she is at risk of vitamin D deficiency. Dark-skinned people need more time in the sun than light-skinned people. Continued sun time for older children once weaned off the breast or formula will obviously continue to provide vitamin D. edited by BFC on 23/06/2011

i didn't give my DD any vitamins in her early days... but now that she's 4 and wayyyy too fussy with her food, I insist on her eating one egg a day, one glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and a multivitamin spoonful before bed each night...
