Breastfeeding Problem
9 month old DS has been exclusively breastfed, he refuses to take formula from a bottle or any type of cup. He's fed pretty much on demand, and the longest he goes between feedings during the day is 3.5 to 4 hours. We've not had any major problems with breastfeeding so far, and to the best of my knowledge I have no supply issues.
I've now hit a major stumbling block in that he isn't gaining much weight ... approx 200g in the last 3 months. He is skinny skinny skinny!
Introducing solids has been a major fight. At first he refused to be spoon fed purees, so I tried a BLW approach instead. He happily accepts any food given to him, and has serious fun attacking it and making huge messes. But I don't think anything actually gets ingested.
His Dr has advised me to cut down on breastfeeding and instead focus on solids, so I've been trying to limit his daytime feeds to a maximum of 4 times, and we're back to spoonfeeding purees. He was tested and his iron levels are low, so he's been prescribed iron drops.
He's accepting the purees a little better now, but he's still not eating a decent amount and every mealtime is a struggle.
Where have I gone wrong with the breastfeeding? Why isn't he gaining weight, and how do I rectify this?
All help greatly appreciated :-)
