My DS (9 weeks today) has always had problems having daytime naps but we've been getting there and he often does 1.5 to 3 hour naps at a time. However today he has decided to wake up exactly 30 mins after going down...each time. It's uncanny how to the minute it is. First few times I put him back to sleep which took almost half an hour then he slept for maybe another half a hour. Then the next time I fell asleep with him in my arms! This last time I just got him up but now he is cranky as obviously still tired. Is this developmental or a new pattern I have to deal with...eek!! Help!

well no...he slept for 30 mins, was up so I picked him and put him back to sleep, then slept another half an hour then was up... I was out most of the day yesterday so he napped in the car seat (why is that so easy huh!!) quite a bit at least and slept relatively well last night. Today is a new day and DH is trying to put him down now for a nap...so we'll see... Hope this doesn't last too long as I do feel like I'm spending all day trying to get him to sleep!

hope he slept well? if you can't resettle him straight away then get him up for a bit and then try again after 30mins-hour to put him back to sleep if he looks like he needs it... I realise this means you spend a lot of the day just getting him to sleep but it's just until his sleep patterns mature, I think some babies need/have lots of short naps until they're a little older, naps for my DD settled down after 4 months.

thanks ladies...well he's gone down for his morning nap and I'm praying for one that's a bit longer...wish us luck. I've read about the idea of going in before they wake but am too scared to do it LOL...watching the video monitor like a hawk in 10 mins and hoping he'll sleep through...

agree with Pentel, if they wake up grumpy nap was too short. My LO had 45 minute naps and was fine with them until 9 months when he suddenly switched to 90 minutes. :) That meant we had 4 naps instead of 3 and then 3 naps instead of 2 but he was happy so it was fine.

I guess that he's now more alert now and finding it difficult to pass into the next sleep cycle, I remember DD doing something similar and I would have to rock/feed/pat her back to sleep. If she woke up crying then she hadn't had enough sleep and I would do whatever it took to get her to sleep again - this sometimes took a long time but she would then wake up chatting and happy. With some babies it takes them a few months to get a predictable nap/sleep pattern so try not to freak out if it changes from one month to the next!

At a guess he is waking at the end of a sleep cycle and not going back to sleep, you can sometimes extend the nap by coming in just as you know he is due to wake and soothing at the first stirs.
