Due to sever reflux I need to put DD (7 weeks old) on AR formula. Should I use a #1 teat for 0-3 months for a Tommy Tippee bottle or should I go for a #2 teat - I have heard that this formula tends to be quite thick?

Any suggestions please?

Yes unfortunately for some its alot more complicated than placing a wedge in the cot. DS was born at 2.7 kilos and went down to 1.8 kilos because he would just scream and cry in pain everytime we tried to feed him. Hes been hospitalized so many times due to dehydration I've lost count. Aptamil AR did wonders to start with then everything went totally downhill till he was diagnosed with cows milk allergy. He was put on neocate which is totally digested and non cows milk. It took a good 3 weeks for all the intrusive proteins to leave his body and for him to settle. He has massive feeding issues even now. Every feed (every 3 hours) is a massive struggle but we get there in the end. I dont know what your doing till now so I'll just go over some things. He is now coming upto 6 months old. When he was aptamil AR we made the milk fresh with boiled water which was still very very hot (left for 15 minutes) and dumped the bottle into a pot of freezing cold water from the dispenser. Milk would be ready within 15 minutes for him. We also added dentinox to his 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm and 6pm feed to help with getting all the wind out. A severe refluxy baby with colic on top is not fun. So we also had DS on a schedule. For us demand feeding just did not work with a reflux baby. He could easily over feed and then there would be vomit all over the place. We fed him every 3 hours and it took him a day or so to get used to it but he did very well on this schedule. Even now that hes 6 months old I feed him every 3 hours and that also helped with reducing the vomiting. Of course you would already know to not lie him down flat for a good 30 minutes after each feed (bouncer is a fine angle). His bed time and naps were in a basic fisher price bouncer with vibration. I felt the vibration really helped sooth him. I didnt like the way DS sat in the bouncer so I cut the cover from behind so that he could sink into his seat more. He really liked that. Hes always been tightly swaddled with a mothercare miracle blanket. I found them to be the best. He takes nexium morning and evening and literally within a week we saw so much difference. The reflux is by far cured but its so much more manageable for us now. He has 10mg at 8am before his 9am feed and he has another 10mg at 5pm before his 6pm feed. We tried every bottle under the sun. Nothing really worked and we kept going back to dr browns (available in toysrus and babyshop). I totally understand what you mean about the nipple being big. DS had a terrible gag reflex also and its only just gone away recently. You could always try NUK wide neck bottles. At newborn we were told by 12 weeks he would be fine, at 12 weeks we were told by 4 months he would be fine and at 4 months we were told by 6 months he would be ok and now at 6 months weve been told he will be on nexium and neocate till 1 year old. We expect to see some big changes by 7 months and I would say that although it does start getting better dont expect any miracles till this age. So many people will make you feel bad for medicatng your son but only YOU know what is right for you and your family. If I hadnt taken a stand and got DS on nexium god knows what would have happened to him. He was already under weight and losing more and more fast. Nexium and neocate have helped him to thrive and developmentally hes also caught up with age so I'm grateful to both. Let me know if theres anything else I can help you with xoxo

DCC did you always make your bottles fresh? Someone mentioned that we could mix the formula with just a little boiled water in advance, refrigerate them and add boiled water to them later when required? Where did you get the Dr Brown bottles? We bought some in BS but they were the narrow teats and it seems to be very long so the poor thing seems to gag on it :( Apparently there are wider bottles that you can get but BS didnt have any.. Yes reflux really is awful - its heartbreaking to see her like that. What age is your LO? Reflux can last for months from what I have heard?

With Aptamil AR we used dr brown bottles and level 2 teat. We made the milk 15 minutes after the water had boiled and it was a great consistency. Never too thick. Reflux is terrible. Our LO also has severe reflux but its now thank god somewhat under control. I would recommend nexium over losec if you do decide to medicate.

Aaaah reflux..remember how much I struggled with my oldest (already 7 years ago *slik*) we tried everything...thickeners to the milk, gaviscon..only one thing really helped. Paeditracian prescribed her zanax...was a life saver! as I said, it is already 7 years ago, so no idea if it is still on the market or if there maybe is anything better..but it did miracles for us! At that time also heard special babymassages also can work... Good luck!
