Can anyone help with this? My DD now 4 years old suffers terribly when we fly with her ears (literally screaming in pain), we have tried everything, sucky sweets, lollypops, drinking water, blowing her nose, ear drops and nothing seems to works... she even woke up in the night with earache after the last flight :( I'm going to take her to an Ear, Nose and Throat doc any recmds or any other ideas or suggestions would be greatly accepted.

Recommend Dr Mulham at Medwin Centre on Beach Road. He is fantastic and probably one of the first doctors I have seen here that genuinely puts his patients before money (of course you do have to pay him but time seems to be irrelevant when he is diagnosing). He was very good with my 4 year old DD.

Hi, I've heard that there is a trick where you put wet tissues in plastic cups and hold that against their ears. I have no idea how and if it works as luckily we never had to try it, but it is supposed to help with the pressure difference... Maybe something you could google? My FIL still has this problem, and also gets dizzy and nauseous when flying, and indeed the doctor said it is because there is a little "leak" in his ear. He now takes cortizone when flying, but of course on doctor's advice. So yes, going to a specialist seems like the best thing to do!

Oh that's interesting JoyceB, she used to complain when she started nursery that music class was too loud and hurt her ears, did get the gp to have a look then but no further investigation done, thought she was ok.

See Dr Heiko Schmidt, Health Bay Polyclinic.

Definitely take her to see a doctor/specialist. Usual causes for ear pain whilst descending are teething, colds and flus, nasal congestion due to allergies, etc so she appears to have problems equalizing her ears. it's not normal for children to have ear pain on take-off so anyone with children who suffer from this need to seek medical advice. Good Luck. Sorry, but that is not true. Many people, including children and babies have ear pain while flying and is caused by different levels of air pressure occurring in the middle ear and from the outside. I get pain during take off and landing but otherwise have no problems with my ears. Obviously ear infections and any other problems with congestion will make matters worse. My DD now aged 32 had no probs flying but was plagued all through her baby and childhood with ear probs while DS who was never unwell had dreadful ear pain when flying and was perfectly fine once landed. :)

Poor little thing is now old enough to link flying with sore ears. My DS had dreadful pressure earrache when we flew and like you, tried the sucking sweets, drinking etc to no avail. On 1 occasion we let him listen to a story tape through earphones during takeoff and landing while sucking hard on a boiled mint sweet. Don't know if it took his mind off the soreness or what but he was definitely not as bad. He too, howled in pain. Might be worth a try? Good luck x

Oh poor little thing. My mum uses otrivine (nose drops) when flying - they come in a pediatric version. Might be a possibility to discuss with the doctor.
