I owe my beautiful bf relationship with my georgous daughter to an LC I met on this board in 2005 ( she lived in AD at the time and we never met face to face) because of her selfless actions, patience, support, the hours she spent typing, forwarding links, clips, information and asking for nothing in return I was inspired to set up my own non profit group Breastfeeding Q&A.

LOL at the NCT! I'm afraid breastfeeding is our only real focus, although members are more than welcome to share childbirth stories too :). Also there is no charge for our meetings or workshops (other than refreshments), so we're a lot cheaper than the NCT and all are welcome! Blinkthink we are also a peer support group and would really love your (and your friend's) participation - Frances has given you the Facebook link below, or do drop me a line on sian.breastfeedingqa at gmail.com . hehe - I've always only seen the NCT as breastfeeding support really... or support to mums who invariably tried to breastfeed as part of their ethos.. In any case, I guess my point was that you guys are trained!

Are there any support groups for breast feeding? I would be very interested in voluntarily to give some time to new mums and I know a lady who ran a campaign for breastfeeding support in the uk who has moved here and would like to give some time too. Breastfeeding Q&A - which I liken to the NCT - and Breastfeeding Mums in Dubai, which was set up with Milk! in mind (more peer support than councillor-led) Frances and BFC are behind BfQ&A and well, I know for a fact that BfMD is growing again, so any input there (coffee morning hostess!) would be hugely appreciated. We had one volunteer host one last week - the first in a long time - and it was a great success.

Hello I am replying late to this thread but just wanted to add my contribution to this post to thank Dr Delphine whom helped me during my still ongoing breastfeeding adventure. Her passion and competence combined with great interpersonal skills helped me when I needed reassurance and advices. I just learnt that she started to give a course about Breastfeeding for pregnant women at Symbiosis clinic as part of the newly launched antenatal classes (in French and English) . I believe this is a valuable ressource as this can make such a difference for us as breastfeeding mums.

Breastfeeding is tough in the first few weeks especially, really missed not being in UK for support of community midwife coming to give you support. Truly benefited this time from advice from BFC here on EW!! Thank you for all the www links. A friend had a LC come to visit her and I was surprised at how expensive it is here. The same cost as going to see my Obgyn! I would not have had that kind of disposable cash to spend for this type of support Are there any support groups for breast feeding? I would be very interested in voluntarily to give some time to new mums and I know a lady who ran a campaign for breastfeeding support in the uk who has moved here and would like to give some time too.

Another shout out for Paula Miller, she taught me that what I wanted to do was ok. She helped me through huge issues with BF but told me that it was ok if I chose not too as the road was so long. She taught me to trust in myself, and how to successfully breastfeed surprise, surprise it's not a skill that we are all born with.

Not a Lactation Consultant by trade, but Cecile De Scally was my saving grace!!! I don't care what some may say about her, but she was there for me during extremely hard & emotional (as we all know what an emotional roller coaster BF'ing can be) times day & night and 100% supported my breastfeeding efforts! **APPLAUSE to all those BFC's and all the Mums who are not ashamed to stand for their cause and help spread awareness**

Nutty - Did you have to get the services of the LC at AH separately or you get to see the LC if you deliver there? I wouldn't mind to have to pay extra if the nurse is good - Can you tell me more about it, please? Hi, the LC name was Naz and was recommended to me by Cecile De Scaly as AH were at the time DD was born the only hospital to have a LC on their staff to visit mums after delivery. I am not sure if you can pay to go to her directly but she did tellmeto pop by any timei had a question.... Only works Sun-Thu office hours though.

Dr Delphine Dupuis is one of the kindest, most compassionate, encouraging, knowledgeable, and non-judgmental people I have ever met. I know I used a lot of adjectives, but she was wonderful to me, my husband, and my baby. I was not able to do direct-feeding from the breast with my DD, but I was able to pump for nearly four months with her help and support. I would not have lasted this long without her--four months doesn't sound like a lot, but it was for me! I am due in several weeks with my second and I will definitely go back to her!

Three cheers for Cecile de Scally, Elizabeth Bain and Dr Delphine Dupuis. All of whom have helped me with my various children along the way. The difference these ladies made was incredible. I'm a flag waving BF'er but my pet hate is the perception that BF'ing is easy, soft and warm and fuzzy. I believe that perception is what leads so many ladies to give up thinking they've failed, can't do it or don't have enough milk. I'm a long term BF'er with three kids and still sought the help of Dr Delphine recently. Needing support is not failure it's completely normal - even for us veterans! I should add that it does get warm and fuzzy and becomes easy when everyone is settled but not at the start and frequently not from time to time during the nursing journey. <em>edited by Alicia on 20/01/2012</em>

Another shout out for the brilliant Paula Miller - without her support no doubt i would have given up in the first few weeks of bleeding cracked nipples, lumps, blisters,...you name it I had it! I used to sit there bf-ing with tears streaming down my face from the pain not wanting to cry out loud and scare DS. She was fantastic, came over twice to see me at home, once at 5.30am to catch his first morning feed, and was always at the end of the phone, even via text when she was on holiday in Thailand! In the end I had to stop BF-ing around 6 months for my own health reasons which was very sad but I was so glad to have perserved for that long and wouldn't have been able to do it without her help. The LC at American Hospital where I delivered was also wonderful help getting us started...her name right now escapes me though!

It's a great thing to do! I am happily BFing my 4 mo DS thanks to all the support and encouragement I got from my lactation consultant, Paula Miller, the breast feeding counselleor here, Sian (BFC) and the lovely doula Brooke (SweetLily). My baby was born a little early and was started on a bottle in NICU. After discharge, he refused to take the breast. If not for the all the help, support and encouragement I got, I would have left trying. After 2 months failed attempts, DS finally took to the breast with a very happy mommy :). Thanks guys for being there when I was most frustrated and ready to give up. My only regret is that I wish I could have directed others to seek the right help as I got. A lot of my friends could not BF due to lack of awareness :(

what a lovely thing to do Frances...My DS was born in November 2010 and I really wanted to breastfeed him. Unfortunately, it proved to be much more difficult and painful then I had ever imagined. If it were not for 2 breastfeeding counsellors there is no way I would have continued breastfeeding him until he was 7 months old. I think it's a great start to life I gave him and I owe that to the wonderful lactation consultants who helped. Paula Miller and Cecile de Scally both helped me at different times and they were both great help.

I used the LC at AH for the first week or 2 to perfect the latch and then Cecile De Scaly for support.Imust say i would never have persevered without so much help as i naturally didnt like BF and suffered a lot of guilt because of this. I also had mastitis several times before eventually stopping at 6 months. I will of course be seeking support 2nd time around as i want to BF and am glad that due to all the support given i was able to give the best start to my child.

I did a lactation class back in NZ that I am convinced is the only reason that DS is still breastfed at 17 months, and probably the reason that I didn't give up after the first week.
