Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth - I have tried Kinokuniya (out of stock), Borders(MOE/ Marina Mall), Booksplus (Greens Village), Magrudys (Sent them a message online - no stock )

Has anyone spotted this book somewhere ? I want to start sleep training my 8 mo.

I got the book from amazon. It is dry but I liked the science behind it, explaining that day sleep and night sleep are different made me appreciate how important daytime naps are. It reassured me that my instinct to do whatever was necessary in the first few months to get DD to sleep didn't mean I'd created a sleep monster who would only sleep if I rocked her a certain way whilst shhhhushing in a certain pitch etc!! He does state that as long as you've been consistent in your soothing methods, whether you've rocked/nursed/sang the baby to sleep or if you've put them down and patted/shushed then if you want to change your approach after 4 months then the baby should find the transition easier. He does also seem to recommend an earlier bedtime for practically every sleep problem, and I must say that this has worked for us!

You can get a lot of advice of his website and blog, his advice re sleep training is basically either A)shut the door and ignore them, or shut the door and check occasionally (ferber style) if you'd prefer. or B) soothe them and co-sleep if you don't want to let them cry. It doesn't really get more specific in techniques. He does say that many babies under 9 months (and some older) may still need 1-2 night feeds and suggests that if they take a good sized feed/won't drop the feed within a few nights of trying then you may want to keep giving it. His main focus is watching tired signs, earlier bedtimes than most other "experts" recommend and establishing patterns to naps from 4 months on. You set your own individual nap times, but he gives rough examples based on statistics. If you post a question on the weissbluthmethod blog, he will often answer it personally, although his replies tend to be very short and generally "try a 5pm bedtime" for most questions :) I'm not knocking the book, I actually learnt a lot from it even though I haven't done the "ignoring" part. It's a hard dry read though, especially when tired, the blog is actually easier to learn from. http://weissbluthmethod.wordpress.com/2010/10/11/nap-facts-9-months/
